Job Title – Maintenance Mechanic

Reports to:

Director of Facilities and Supervisor of Maintenance and Grounds

Job Purpose:

To perform skilled trade work in the repair of buildings, facilities, equipment, and grounds, in order to provide all students and staff with an environment that is safe, clean, pleasant and conducive for teaching and learning.

Qualifications – Required
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in the field of commercial building maintenance
  • Knowledge of software programs designed for completing/organizing work orders
  • Must be able to read simple measuring devices and understand simple specifications
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing heating and cooling systems, pumps, fans, etc.
  • Must be familiar with chillers, gas‑fired boilers, building automation systems and all controls including electric, digital, and pneumatic.
  • Must be able to perform general trade work, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, masonry, & roofing.
  • Must be able to use a scissor lift to access high ceilings
  • Must be able to work independently and/or with others as assigned
  • Must be able to work with all levels of staff
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written)
  • Able to speak English clearly and accurately
  • Valid NJ Driver's license
  • Able to pass the Criminal History Review
  • Able to pass Pre‑employment Physical
Qualifications – Desired
  • Associates Degree HVAC
  • Black Seal License
  • CFC Certification, EPA Refrigerant Recovery Certification
  • Additional HVAC certifications and/or licenses
  • Ability to repair commercial kitchen equipment, standby generators and transfer switches
  • Ability to repair/maintain associated plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and Building Automation Systems (BAS) and controls.
Duties / Responsibilities
  • Assists HVAC certified staff to Troubleshoot, maintain, inspect, modify, repair, and perform preventative maintenance on heating, ventilation systems, air conditioning and refrigeration systems and equipment
  • Responds to routine and emergency calls for repairs and service
  • Performs general building maintenance as directed, to include, but not limited to, rough and finish carpentry, plumbing, minor electrical, masonry, and roofing
  • Installation and mounting of classroom whiteboards, bulletin boards, clocks, and any other objects that need to be mounted into the wall
  • Operates various pieces of light construction equipment/machinery in a safe manner.
  • Uses computer hardware/software to manage work orders, and document all activities related to same
  • Responsible for the care and maintenance of tools and/or equipment
  • Proper care and use of school equipment
  • Proper care and use of District Vehicles
  • Performs other tasks as directed by the Supervisor of Maintenance and Grounds that may not be included in this list

Physical Requirements:

• Able to lift 50 lbs unassisted above the waist

• Able to handle moderate physical exertion

• Able to walk, stand extensively for long periods of time

• Mobility, occasionally climbing of ladders, crawling, stooping, or working in awkward positions

• Able to lift or move heavy parcels, machines and equipment up to 50 lbs on a regular basis

• Able to operate a scissor lift

• Manual dexterity and coordination

• Able to walk up/down stairs
