POSITION SUMMARY
The Registered Nurse is a member of the interdisciplinary team, collaborating with the Physician. The RN uses the nursing care process in accordance with their license/certification, delivering culturally competent care across inpatient, outpatient, and community settings. The RN coordinates the interdisciplinary plan of care and ensures it aligns with the medical treatment plan. The patient care process includes:
- Assessment: gather and organize subjective and objective data across physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and cultural domains.
- Planning: identify problems and outcomes, documenting a plan of care for the patient, family, and interdisciplinary team.
- Intervention: implement interventions or orders consistent with the plan of care and medical treatment plan.
- Evaluation: determine effectiveness, revise problems/goals/plan of care as needed, document actions, and initiate reassessment.
- Identify and prioritize issues across biophysical, psychological, environmental, self-care, educational and social factors; establish goals and provide education to promote patient empowerment.
Experience may include limited laboratory services as required, including specimen collection preparation, testing, quality control, instrument maintenance, result reporting, and maintaining competency/certification.
Licensed and registered care providers document assessments, plans, interventions, and evaluations per scope of practice and organizational policy. The RN supports performance improvement and provides leadership to the patient care team, pursuing ongoing professional growth.
Emergency Room and Other Areas
Experience and certifications vary by department. Highlights include:
- Emergency Room: 2 years medical/surgical and/or emergency room experience preferred. ACLS required within 6 months of hire or transfer. ATCN or TNCC required within 24 months. Minimum of 8 contact hours/year in basic trauma assessment and stabilization; NIHSS education to be completed by 6 months. PALS or ENPC within 12 months. CPI required within specified timelines.
- Trauma Bay, ICU/CTICU, CVU, HVU, PCU, OR, PACU, Interventional Radiology, Cath Lab, Endoscopy, Radiation, Oncology, Structural Heart, and other units have specific requirements (ACLS, PALS, CCRN, CNOR, etc.) and experience prerequisites listed per department.
Qualifications
Education / Licensure
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program; BSN preferred.
- RN license in New Jersey or equivalent multi-state license required.
- BLS required.
- Valid NJ Driver’s License required for employees in Adult and Child Partial Programs.
Experience
Proficiency in clinical applications preferred at time of hire; new incumbents will be trained and expected to perform required duties within 30–60 days.
Specialty Areas / Certifications
Many departments require various certifications and ongoing education (ACLS, PALS/ENPC, ATCN, TNCC, CPI, etc.). Refer to department-specific postings for details. Some units note NICU/L&D/Pediatrics requirements and population-focused competencies.
Performance Expectations
Demonstrates department-specific competencies as listed on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool.
Work Environment
Exposure to hospital hazards, blood borne pathogens, infectious diseases, hazardous substances, and potential injury. Physical demands include extensive standing/walking, reaching, kneeling, crouching, and lifting or moving patients/equipment as described per unit. Some departments may require color discernment.
Reporting Relationship
