Description Position SummaryThe Medical Assistant is responsible for providing patient care and support within the ambulatory setting. The Medical Assistant accurately completes patient interviews, collects appropriate specimens, assists the physician with patient exams, maintains departmental inventory, provides patient education, and ensures quality direct patient care and non-professional services as directed by the Physician. This position is also responsible for performing the following as required by position: phlebotomy for diagnostic studies, CLIA waived testing, and may also complete EKGs and drug and alcohol testing.
This position supports organizational goals by providing quality customer service, participating in performance improvement efforts, and demonstrating a commitment to teamwork and cooperation.
As part of the Virtualist Program, this position is responsible for collecting patient intakes remotely and assisting in telehealth visits as directed by the physician. This position is not responsible for doing any hands‑on patient exams, procedures, collecting specimens, or phlebotomy for diagnostic studies. For this program, BLS certification is excluded.
QualificationsEducation: High School Diploma or equivalent required. Graduate of a Medical Assistant program required.
License/Certification: Certification in Phlebotomy ASCP preferred. BLS. HCP certified within six months of hire or transfer. Must be a graduate of a post‑secondary Medical Assistant program accredited by a national accrediting agency, with a minimum of 330 hours of instruction, including special training around medication administration as per the NJ Board of Medical Examiners required. All Certified Medical Assistants must maintain active National Certification with a certifying agency approved by NJ (e.g., American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), National Center of Competency Testing (NCCT), National Health Career Association (NHA), or American Medical Technologist (AMT), Board of Medical Examiners (BME)).
As part of the Virtualist Program, BLS certification is excluded.
Experience: 1‑3 years of prior experience in ambulatory care preferred. Able to handle high volume of interactions with frequent interruptions required. Proficiency in Clinical Applications preferred at time of hire; incumbents within the position will be trained appropriately and skill will be required within 30‑60 days from date of hire.
Performance ExpectationsDemonstrates the competencies as established on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool for this position.
Work EnvironmentPotential exposure to hazards and risks of the medical office environment, blood‑borne pathogens, infectious disease, hazardous substances, and potential injury. Requires reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, sitting, standing, walking, and frequent telephone work. Frequently lifts 25‑50 lbs and occasionally lifts 50‑100 lbs.
