Overview
The Registered Nurse is a member of the interdisciplinary team working in collaboration with the Physician. The Registered Nurse utilizes the nursing care process consistent with their license and/or certification including initiation of culturally competent continuum of care including inpatient, outpatient and community settings. The Registered Nurse is responsible to oversee any necessary coordination of the interdisciplinary plan of care and provides for its consistency with the medical treatment plan.
The patient care process includes assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation, and is documented according to standards, procedural guidelines and organizational policy. The Registered Nurse actively supports performance improvement initiatives and provides leadership to other members of the patient care team. By participating in educational activities, the Registered Nurse assumes responsibility for continued professional and personal growth.
- Assessment – identification, gathering and organization of subjective and objective data pertaining to the patient/family/significant other, including physical, psychosocial, spiritual and cultural factors.
- Planning – identification of actual or potential problems and desired outcomes (goals) with a documented plan of care to guide the patient, family and interdisciplinary team.
- Intervention – specific interventions or orders implemented in accordance with the plan of care and medical treatment plan.
- Evaluation – determine effectiveness of interventions, document actions, and decide on reassessment or revisions as needed.
- Prioritization and education – identify and prioritize problems across biophysical, psychological, environmental, self-care, educational and social domains; provide education aligned with problems and goals to empower patients.
At times, limited laboratory services may be performed, including specimen collection, processing, quality control, instrument maintenance and reporting results to clinicians, with maintained competency and certification.
Qualifications and Licensure- Graduate of an accredited nursing program; BSN preferred. Nurses without a BSN must enroll in a BSN program within 1 year and complete it within 3 years.
- Current Licensure as a Registered Nurse in New Jersey or current multi-state license required.
- BLS required. Valid NJ Driver's License required for all employees in the Adult and Child Partial Programs.
2 years medical/surgical and/or emergency room experience preferred; specialties list may apply by department. ACLS required within 6 months of hire or transfer; ATCN or TNCC required within 24 months; PALS or ENPC within 12 months; CPI competency by specified deadlines. Other role-specific qualifications (e.g., NICU, L&D, Trauma, ICU, CVU, HVU, PAT, Endoscopy, Cath Lab, Interventional Radiology, etc.) are listed by department with corresponding certifications and timelines.

Demonstrates the ability to perform department-specific competencies as listed on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool.
Work EnvironmentPotential exposure to hospital hazards, blood borne pathogens, infectious diseases, hazardous substances, latex and radiation. The physical demands commonly include reaching, stooping, kneeling and crouching; extensive standing and walking (including stairs); lifting 25-50 pounds frequently and 50-100 pounds with assistance; pushing and pulling heavy equipment. Some departments require color discrimination.
Unit/Populations Served & Core CompetenciesPopulation-specific competencies apply across units (e.g., Emergency, Trauma, ICU/CTICU, CVU, HVU, Oncology, Endoscopy, Wound Care, Behavioral Health, Pediatrics, Labor & Delivery, NICU, Maternity, etc.). Core responsibilities include assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation for the indicated populations; certifications such as ACLS, PALS, NRPs, CCRN, CNOR, OCN, EFM-C, and others may be required by department with specified timelines.
Reporting RelationshipThis position reports to the patient care unit or department leadership.
