The Heavy‑Duty Mechanic (HDM
A) is responsible for performing inspections, major and minor repairs, overhauls and servicing on all types of locomotives.
- Ability to work irregular shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and occasional overtime.
- Shop environment.
- Occasional travel.
- Perform major and minor repairs, overhauls and servicing on all types of locomotives. Video demonstration available upon request.
- Inspect, service and maintain locomotives in accordance with federal and company regulations, including changing oil, repairing, replacing, cleaning and adjusting parts.
- Diagnose diesel engine malfunctions and make required repairs.
- Assemble and start engines.
- Use electric and oxy‑acetylene welding equipment, lubrication equipment and other vehicle repair tools, operating them safely and effectively.
- Prepare inspection, maintenance and work reports, recording details on prescribed forms in line with established procedures.
- Operate locomotives on shop tracks and test them after repair.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Diesel mechanic experience and/or diesel mechanic diploma.
- A valid driver’s license.
- Proficiency with measuring devices and visual displays.
- Basic technical knowledge of diesel mechanics.
- Good hand‑eye coordination.
- Commitment to quality, safety and client satisfaction.
- Frequent lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs. (22 kg).
- Valid commercial driver’s license for the class and type of equipment operated.
- Ability to certify company equipment in accordance with provincial standards.
- Experience troubleshooting hydraulic and electronic systems.

This position is a unionized position, as such pay and benefits are governed by the applicable collective agreement.
Paid TrainingSuccessful candidates will receive on‑the‑job training, both theoretical and practical. Depending on experience, candidates may enter a 4‑year apprenticeship program and attend courses at the work location in Canada.
Training covers locomotive components, control systems, air brakes, start‑up, basic diesel‑electric systems, CN maintenance regulations, traction motors, event recorders, fuel, oil, water and air systems, plus power assembly. Successful completion is essential for future duties.
