Senior Consultant – Employee Relations
Please note this role will work in a hybrid environment. The successful candidate will be working a mixture of on‑site and off‑site work based on the parameters for our operations to meet the needs of our donors, our staff and our communities. Currently, employees are expected to have an in‑person presence for at least 40% of their work time. This requirement may vary depending upon circumstances.

About this role
Canadian Blood Services is looking for a regular, full‑time Senior Consultant, Employee Relations to join our dynamic Employee Relations team to support our operations in Western Canada.

Formula for Success

Harnessing your skills in Collective Bargaining process, prepare and obtain support for management proposals and counter proposals for a portfolio of bargaining groups. Responsible for the negotiation of all matters such as working conditions, wages, health and welfare benefits. Ensure that proposals are in line with the national mandate and overall strategic direction of the organization.

Using your organization skills, compose and sign all official correspondence. Maintain records of negotiations and all related communications, and prepare status reports as required. Inform management on progress of negotiations.

Leveraging your superior research skills, analyze the collective agreements and research reference documents, labour legislation, labour market conditions, prevailing union and management practices, and provincial settlements for use in the review of current contract provisions and proposed changes.

Drawing on your expertise in Employee relations, provide advice and guidance on grievances (including arbitrations), disciplinary issues and general issues regarding applicable labour legislation. Responsible for drafting and has authority to execute Minutes of Settlement and Memorandum of Understandings, as appropriate.

Utilizing your business acumen assist the Associate Director, Employee Relations & HR Operations in the development of labour relations strategies to foster a positive employee and labour relations environment and to meet the future needs of the organization.

Leveraging on your knowledge of employment legislation, provide direction on the interpretation and administration of agreements, terms and conditions of employment, labour legislation, and Corporate policies and procedures.

Using your ability to adapt to changing needs, Identify the requirement for new or revised employee‑related policies. Research and develop new / revised policies ensuring consultation with appropriate stakeholders. Develop implementation, communication and educational material as required and train HR Managers on changes.

Desired Education & Skills

Post secondary level education in a relevant discipline from a recognised academic institution, preferably an Undergraduate Degree in Labour/Industrial Relations.

A professional Certification in Human Resources management, e.g., CPHR (or working towards a certification) is an asset.

Five years of progressive Labour Relations experience including experience as a spokesperson in collective bargaining.

Superior communication and interpersonal skills along with the proven ability to exercise sound judgement, tact, and discretion.

Advanced knowledge and demonstrated ability in dispute resolution, investigative methods, as well as negotiation, mediation and facilitation.

Ability to analyze complex problems in a potentially adversarial climate.

Extensive knowledge of employment and labour‑related legislation, labour relations jurisprudence, principles, and practices, as well as working knowledge of the latest trends, developments and practices in Human Resources management.
