As a Seasonal Inspections & Compliance Officer, you will play a vital role in upholding the integrity of Edmonton’s urban landscape through professional oversight and collaborative problem‑solving.

This temporary role provides essential inspection functions within the Development Approvals and Inspections Section. You will be responsible for inspecting small‑scale residential developments to ensure they comply with approved permits, the Zoning Bylaw, and the Municipal Government Act. By providing clear direction and education to community partners, you help support Edmonton’s livability and long‑term growth goals.

What will you do?

Research and inspect residential properties under development by reviewing site plans, construction drawings, and attending high volumes of construction sites to ensure the property has been built in accordance with the approved development permit and the regulations of Edmonton Zoning Bylaw 20001.

Manage a highly‑organized caseload of inspections files – compiling, organizing, and preserving inspection information in accordance with statutory regulations and internal inspection procedures.

Collect and preserve evidence, including taking precise measurements and photographs, to document site conditions.

Actively communicate with builders, providing education regarding the City’s Zoning bylaw, notifying them of inspection findings and next steps to remediate deficiencies where they are found.

Follow established Occupational Health and Safety protocols and regulations outlined in corporate policies and procedures.

Follow an escalated 4E compliance and enforcement model where bylaw infractions exist – providing education to stakeholders, issuing written or verbal warnings for non‑compliance, or referring non‑compliant files to senior officers for escalated enforcement.

Provide community members and industry partners with knowledgeable and timely responses to inquiries related to zoning bylaw regulations or contraventions.

Other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Completion of a 2‑year diploma in Planning, Landscape Architectural Technology, Architectural Technology, Civil Engineering, or a related field.

2 years of experience in a planning‑related environment.

1 year of experience specifically conducting inspections.

1 year of experience in a high‑volume customer service role.

Assets

Experience using inspection equipment such as laser measures, levels, tripods, and measuring tapes.

Proficiency with Google Suite, Google Docs, Microsoft Excel/Google Sheets, Microsoft Powerpoint/Google Slides and familiarity with other enterprise systems including but not limited to POSSE, CORES, SPIN, SAP, SLIM, and GIS.

Skills required for success

Demonstrated ability to apply critical thinking, ethical judgment, discretion, professionalism, and diplomacy when working through complex inspections, compliance, and enforcement matters.

Strong analytical thinking skills and demonstrated attention to detail.

Strong customer service and conflict resolution skills – with the ability to actively listen and communicate inclusively and respectfully, to manage and resolve confrontational situations, and to deal effectively with sensitive issues on a continuous basis.

Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships and strong partnerships with a diverse group of team members and stakeholders, and the desire to work functionally in a team environment.

Knowledge and experience with planning terminology, practices, procedures, and work methods applied within a planning environment.

Ability to interpret regulatory and statutory documents including legislation and bylaws governing the business activities of the area, such as the City of Edmonton’s Zoning Bylaw 20001 and the Municipal Government Act.
