Position: Engineering Intern (Temporary 12 Month Term)
Location: Acheson

SMS Equipment is seeking an Engineering Intern for a temporary, full-time term of 12 months with the possibility of extension.

The Engineering Intern is responsible for assisting with the coordination and deployment of application, design, compliance, service and other engineering support services.

Work Location: Acheson, AB
Salary: $65,000 - $68,000 annually. This temporary position is eligible for extended health benefits.
Work Arrangement: Hybrid – providing the flexibility to work remotely up to 2 days per week.
Schedule: Monday to Friday.

Anticipated start date for this role is May 2026.

What You'll Do

Responsible for compiling Installation guides for flat rate procedure documentation and other fabrication or modification documentation as required.

Document and publish technical failure reports obtained from the field, offers equipment modification recommendations specific to the Canadian market.

Investigate mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic system problems by understanding and utilizing engineering standards, technical manuals, engineering prints and electronic test tooling.

Liaise with Komatsu Engineering Group to acquire OEM drawings and specifications; provides feedback to influence OEM’s manufacturing standards by communicating customer’s needs and market changes.

Assist with designing and creating drawings within the Corporate Engineering group.

Assist with risk assessments for modifications and equipment specification changes proposed by SMS Equipment.

Support various requests related to ensuring machines meet various design, durability, compliance, environmental and safety standards.

Participate in machine application studies at customer sites and analyzes the production capacity of Komatsu machines and fleets.

Participate in application specific modifications to optimize machine performance.

Strive to achieve standardization of attachments and adaptations where possible.

Prepare SEST requests to Komatsu for attachment approvals.

Assists with Body Worksheets to Komatsu for truck body approvals.

Prepare SFR requests to Komatsu for special features.

Other duties as required.

What You Bring

The ideal candidate will be an Engineering Technologist or Engineer in Training. Additional requirements include:

Strong engineering aptitude.

Excellent communication skills both written and verbally.

Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and have a wide-ranging working knowledge of computer systems.

Keep abreast of new technologies, focus on continuous improvement and best practices pertaining to the Company’s products and services, enhancing expertise, performance and bottom-line productivity.

Able to consistently make intelligent decisions under pressure; possess good judgement, initiative, positive attitude and be dependable.

Valid Class 5 Drives Licence.

This position is classified as an Individual Contributor
