The Opportunity
The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is currently recruiting two Geoscience Students to assist the talented team of professionals in the Regulatory Applications (RA) Branch with overseeing the responsible development of Alberta’s oil and gas resources. You will work within either the In Situ Applications Conformance team or the Subsurface Oil and Gas Geology and Hydrogeology team, supporting regulatory oversight for groundwater and other geoscience areas within these sectors.
This role offers a unique opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of resource recovery projects in Alberta, including their operations, impact management, geological and hydrogeological settings, successes and challenges, and efforts to meet regulatory requirements.
The Regulatory Applications Branch consists of geoscientists, engineers, and environmental science experts who collaborate to manage the regulatory lifecycle of oil, gas, and coal developments. In this role, you will learn from these professionals and develop an appreciation for how Alberta’s regulatory framework relies on technical sciences to ensure the safe, environmentally responsible, and efficient recovery of energy resources. While our work is dynamic and critical to fulfilling the AER’s mandate, we remain committed to our cultural values: supporting one another, prioritizing personal wellness, fostering professional development, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
What your day-to-day will look like:
Assist a multi-disciplinary team in developing a comprehensive repository of regulatory submissions and surveillance opportunities for groundwater and other geoscience areas, as required under the Environmental Protection & Enhancement Act, Water Act, Oil and Gas Conservation Act, and Oil Sands Conservation Act.
Identify additional commitments outlined in regulatory applications and monitoring plans, documenting details, timelines, and frequencies of these commitments.
Compile and evaluate key technical information within regulatory submissions.
Assist with desktop surveillance activities and approval maintenance, including supporting risk-based prioritization of groundwater surveillance, enhancing application assessment criteria, and conducting technical audits of select submissions.
Visualize and present information collected through surveillance programs to support analysis and decision-making.
What we’re looking for in you:
Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s program in Geoscience, Hydrogeology, or a related field.
Familiarity with the stratigraphy of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin is an asset.
Familiarity with hydrogeology is considered an asset.
Familiarity with in situ oil sands or oil and gas resource development is an asset.
Strong analytical and data presentation skills.
Effective verbal and written communication skills, with an emphasis on technical writing.
Additional Information:
Proof of enrollment in a registered institution including enrollment in the semester following the work term, or enrollment in a registered co-op program will be a condition of hire.
Please include a cover letter as part of your application.
All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.
Should an individual with the required qualifications not be available, applicants with closely related qualifications may be considered. As a result, the position may be redesigned and/or reclassified.
