Designer/Instructor – Artists in Residence Program – Theatre Prospero

We are seeking a Designer/Instructor to join the Artists/Instructors Jennifer Spencer and Julie Golosky for a three‑week residency at C.J. Schurter Elementary School in Slave Lake, Alberta. The role involves guiding students in kindergarten to grade 3 as they improvise, write, act, dance, sing, paint, and draw stories about the local environment.

Dates and Location

May 15‑16, 21‑23, and 27‑31 (May 14, 20, and 26 are travel days). C.J. Schurter School is located 250 km north of Edmonton.

Responsibilities
  • Lead visual design and teaching sessions for 400 students over ten days, 5–6 hours daily.
  • Use a variety of media—projection, lighting, painting, props, and costumes—to support students’ creative storytelling.
  • Engage large groups, maintain focused yet enjoyable learning environments, and coordinate with teachers and older students.
  • Help students prepare presentations and exhibitions for the final day of the residency.
  • Delegate tasks effectively, manage time and resources in a fast‑moving setting, and create order from occasional chaos.
Qualifications
  • Proven experience in design (set, lighting, costume, or visual media) and teaching or facilitating arts programs for children.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Creative, independent thinker who can identify opportunities and inspire students to pursue them.
  • Experience managing large groups of children in a structured yet flexible manner.
Compensation and Logistics
  • $230 per day for time spent in school.
  • Per diem meal aligned with Equity standards.
  • Hotel accommodation booked by the company.
  • Travel reimbursement and transportation to and from Slave Lake.
  • Company will cover materials and reimburse expenses as needed.
