Senior Project Accountant Reports to: Controller
Position SummaryThe Senior Project Accountant is responsible for managingplex accounting functions, ensuring financial accuracy, and supporting strategic financial planning. This role plays a key part in project reporting, including budgeting, forecasting, and analysis, while also providing mentorship to junior team members and contributing to the enhancement of internal controls.
Key Responsibilities:Project Accounting & Reporting
Support the Controller with budget‑to‑actual analysis, variance reporting, and project cost tracking.Lead budgeting and forecasting activities, collaborating closely with project managers to gather data and provide financial insights.Prepare Work in Progress (WIP) reports and support internal review procedures.Manage accounting for development projects, land development, new builds, tenant improvements, and landlord work across new and existing properties.Prepare and issue accurate and timely progress billings.Oversee project closeout activities, including final invoicing, cost reconciliations, retainage, and true‑ups.Review labor and non‑labor costs for accurate coding, allocation, and capitalization, ensuringpliance with internal policies.Support monthly draw processes by preparing cost summaries, supporting documentation, and certification packages.Assist with month‑end close activities, including journal entries, reconciliations, and reporting.Ensure adherence to internal controls, contract terms, and audit requirements.Leadership &
Team DevelopmentManage people-related responsibilities, including hiring, training, performance reviews, coaching, and, when required, terminations.Mentor and support accounting team members, promoting a collaborative and high‑performance work environment.What You Bring
Diploma or degree in Accounting.Minimum 7+ years of accounting experience, ideally with strong exposure to construction or development accounting.Solid understanding of construction accounting principles, including WIP, draws, and cost controls.Experience with construction budgets, forecasting, and lender reporting.Prior experience in a construction environment is preferred.Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.Experience with Yardi is an asset.Strong relationship‑building skills and the ability to work effectively with multiple stakeholders.Objective, detail‑oriented, and able to maintain professionalism when responding to inquiries.Ability to managepeting priorities, work under pressure, and meet deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.Strong analytical, critical‑thinking, troubleshooting, and problem‑solving skills.Excellentmunication, interpersonal, and organizational abilities.Collaborative mindset with a positive, professional attitude.
