Provides direct service and support to students through comprehensive academic and career planning from the point of admission to graduation. Provides learning strategy support, graduation planning, and monitoring student progress toward degree. Responsible for guidance and mentoring to optimize the student experience, improve student retention and success. Services include orientation, registration, assessment of learning, referral, and facilitating student engagement in academic and career planning activities within the university.
Position OverviewAdvises students on appropriate academic schedules, choice of major and/or minor, credit hours, probation, and suspension. Guides students on academic goals, course load, and study habits. Maintains knowledge of policies and procedures. Assists with campus events such as orientation and promotions. Completes graduation forms and degree evaluations. Performs degree checks, monitors progress, and advises on an appropriate plan of study. Develops college/school documents such as plans of study, curriculum guides, graduation forms, and study abroad documentation.
May assist with recruitment of prospective students. Works under minimal supervision and handles complex issues. Provides guidance and counseling on academic goals, curriculum, course load, study habits, and scheduling. Assists with student orientation and recruitment as needed.
- Counsel students regarding academic endeavors.
- Inform students on academic schedules, major choices, credit hours, probation, and suspension; suggest remedial actions.
- Provide guidance in selecting a major and/or minor.
- Evaluate student records and complete degree evaluations; articulate coursework as needed.
- Assist in development and implementation of student success and retention programs, materials, and events.
- Act as a resource for academic information and decision-making strategies.
- Serve as liaison between colleges/departments, campus community, and prospective students.
- Help students engage in transformative co-curricular activities (leadership, research, service learning, global competencies, health and wellness).
- Participate in training and evaluation sessions.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in a related field plus 3+ years of work experience in a related field, or 4+ years of equivalent work experience that provides knowledge of fundamental theories, principles, and concepts.
Qualifications PreferredMaster’s degree in a related field. 3+ years of prior academic advising/counseling experience. Familiarity with admission and enrollment processes in higher education and undergraduate degree programs. Knowledge of Ellucian Banner and Microsoft Office.
Knowledge / Skills / AbilitiesKnowledge of the higher education attainment process and related requirements. Demonstrated warm, professional counseling approach and creative counseling techniques. Ability to communicate effectively with department chairs and/or deans regarding degree requirements. Ability to work well under pressure. Understanding of university policies and procedures as they relate to academic advising. Ability to maintain databases. Technical proficiency; teamwork; time management; independence; results-oriented.
