Overview
The JFK Neuroscience Institute Neuro Hospitalist Nurse Practitioner/Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) or Physician Assistant (PA) utilizes a patient-centered coordinated care model, demonstrating competencies in leadership, direct clinical practice, consultation/collaboration, coaching/guiding, research, and ethical decision-making. The APN works collaboratively with the practice/hospital team to assess, plan, and implement care for individuals with health and safety needs.
Responsibilities- Conduct inpatient neurology consultations.
- Schedule:
7 days on/7 days off; 8‑hour days starting at 8 or 9 am. Weekends to be discussed. On‑call required. - Perform and document accurate, complete, and relevant history and physical assessments appropriate for the patient's age, gender, and clinical problem.
- Order, perform, and interpret laboratory tests and diagnostic studies/procedures in collaboration with physicians and consultants as appropriate.
- Manage general medical and surgical conditions based on comprehensive knowledge of etiologies, risk factors, pathophysiology, and pharmacologic indications/contraindications.
- Prescribe medication safely and effectively in accordance with best practices, hospital policy, and New Jersey regulations, providing patient education as needed.
- Seek opportunities to promote Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) APN or PA practice recognition locally, nationally, and internationally through conferences,, and presentations.
- Provide patient‑ and family‑centered, compassionate, and effective care to promote health and treat disease.
- Practice as a healthcare provider according to the rules and regulations of the Medical Staff and bylaws as outlined in the delineation of privileges.
- Adhere to HMH nursing or PA protocols, standards of care, and disease‑specific quality indicators.
- Apply evidence‑based and value‑based medicine to systematically analyze and improve patient care practices and outcomes.
- Evaluate patient/family transition of care planning, considering resource utilization, cost, quality, safety, and self‑management promotion for chronic conditions.
- Demonstrate clinical expertise through advanced assessment and procedural skills pertinent to the practice specialty.
- Complete medication reconciliations as appropriate.
- Participate in annual peer review for APN or PA.
- Translate best practice into clinical practice by evaluating current protocols and standards of care.
- Provide culturally sensitive and educationally appropriate health management education to patients and families.
- Facilitate consistent, coordinated care and clear communication among all members of the healthcare team through participation in daily interdisciplinary rounds.
- Serve as an advocate for patients and families, identifying and addressing obstacles to care progression and escalating issues as appropriate.
- Serve as a clinical resource for the multidisciplinary team by addressing clinical, process, and system improvement opportunities.
- Participate in organizational and departmental meetings, committees, and work groups as necessary.
- Demonstrate the highest level of accountability for professional practice and adhere to ethical principles regarding patient confidentiality, informed consent, and adverse outcomes.
- Collaborate with medical staff to support nursing‑ or PA‑led protocols.
- Mentor other APNs or PAs, precept students in APN or PA programs, and participate in educational programs for nursing or medicine as a clinical expert.
- Identify patient/family educational needs and collaborate to implement appropriate teaching materials.
- Promote a collaborative work environment supporting the organizational mission, behavior expectations, values, and pillars.
- Promote innovation by integrating new clinical knowledge into practice.
- Participate in clinical research activities and disseminate findings through practice, education, presentations, and publications.
- Identify ethical care issues and coordinate interdisciplinary meetings to resolve them.
- Adhere to the legal framework and scope of practice defined by the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs, ensuring compliance with all applicable statutes and professional standards.
