Responsibilities

The Registered Nurse functions as a caregiver for a specific patient population to achieve desired outcomes. This position expands knowledge and skills, provides effective direct care as part of the interdisciplinary team to a variety of complex patients, and directs and oversees care provided by other caregivers through delegation, validation, evaluation, and coordination. It coordinates patient care/unit activities among nursing peers, physicians, and support services.

A day in the life of a Registered Nurse includes:
Assessment, Planning, Implementation and Evaluation.

  • Collects comprehensive data pertinent to the patient’s health or the situation.
  • Performs age- and disease-specific assessment/data collection independently in a systematic manner focusing on physiologic, psychological, and cognitive status.
  • Recognizes clinical and diagnostic status changes in patient status.
  • Identifies variables in patient/family education needs based on age, disease, and culturally specific learning differences.

Plan:
Develops a plan of care that prescribes strategies and interventions to attain expected outcomes. Formulates age and disease-specific patient/family centered goals/outcomes based on assessment data. Develops and coordinates a patient/family focused plan of care that encompasses the continuum of care.

  • Implementation:
    Communicates, coordinates, and implements the plan of care. Provides ongoing communication with patient/family, nursing colleagues and other health care team members regarding patient status and care plans. Implements age and disease-specific care in an organized and timely manner. Provides or coordinates patient/family education as needed and ensures understanding. Follows established protocols and documents events. Delivers nursing care and treatments reflecting patient needs and evidence-based practice.

    Maintains continuous Point-of-Care documentation. Utilizes safe medication administration with updated bar-scanning/documentation technologies. Coordinates multi-disciplinary discharge planning for safe transitions.
  • Evaluation:
    Evaluates progress toward outcomes. Applies critical thinking to achieve patient outcomes. Initiates interventions related to changes in condition or unexpected responses to care.
Qualifications
  • Education:

    Minimum of an Associate Degree in Nursing or Diploma in Nursing. BSN in progress or willingness to acquire within three (3) years of hire (policy notes apply based on hire date).
  • Experience:

    Six (6) months of relevant nursing experience or active participation in Hackensack Meridian Health Nurse Residency Program.
  • Abilities:
    Ability to learn quickly, adapt to changing patient needs, strong accountability, teamwork, ongoing education, and patient-focused care.
Licenses & Certifications
  • Current and valid Registered Nurse license to work at the assigned HMH location by date of hire.
  • BLS/CPR certification by American Heart Association required within 60 days of hire.
Preferred
  • National Certification in area of specialty (preferred when eligible).
Additional Responsibilities
  • Identify ethical issues and bring to attention of the team.
  • Enhance patient satisfaction opportunities.
  • Maintain competencies, certifications, and continuing education per accreditation or licensing requirements.
  • Adhere to American Nurses Association Code for Nurses with Interpretive Statements.
  • Lifts minimums: 35 lbs., pushes/pulls 10 lbs., stands 6 hours/day.
  • Adhere to HMH organizational and behavioral standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Benefits & Compensation
  • Compensation:
    Minimum rate of $45.14 hourly. Pay transparency per New Jersey Act. Total rewards package includes health, dental, vision, paid leave, tuition reimbursement, and retirement benefits.
