Join Our Brain Trauma Unit at JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute. JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute, ranked among the nation’s top rehabilitation hospitals by U.S. News & World Report, is seeking dedicated professionals to join our Brain Trauma Unit, an acute inpatient program providing comprehensive care for adults recovering from brain injuries. Our unit uses an integrated, interdisciplinary approach to support patients and their families.

Responsibilities- Provide patient care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the guests/patients served in assigned service.
- Provide for effective and safe patient outcomes through practice, judgment and critical actions. Maintain ongoing communication with patients, nursing colleagues and other members of the health care team regarding patient’s status and rendered care.
- Take initiative to go beyond what is expected, improving job performance and creating new opportunities.
- Participate in interdisciplinary collaboration of the patient’s plan of care from admission to discharge to ensure safe transitioning and continuum of care.
- Participate in Unit/Department Performance Improvement (PI) activities. Specific job functions may include but are not limited to:
- Welcomes patients and checks for proper identification bracelets.
- Prepares the patient for assessment/admission, physical examination and procedures.
- Recognizes and responds to opportunities to enhance patient satisfaction.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skill to provide care appropriate to age of patients on the unit.
- Obtains clinical data (temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, O2 saturation) and documents findings; notifies RN of abnormal results.
- Draws intravenous or capillary blood using aseptic technique and labels specimens appropriately.
- Performs venipuncture for laboratory tests and assists with specimen handling and transport.
- Performs EKGs as directed; assists with equipment maintenance and ensures readiness of code carts and emergency equipment.
- Applies bandages, slings, compression boots and hypothermia blankets as directed by RN.
- Assists with patient transport and with meals and feeding as needed.
- Checks inventory and ensures rooms are prepared for admission.
- Provides direct hygiene and comfort care, including bathing, toileting, oral hygiene, incontinent care, and bed making.
- Assists patients with dressing/undressing and manages patient belongings as per property checklist.
- Performs and documents glucose finger sticks and collects other specimens as directed.
- Provides post-mortem care as needed.
- Obtains and documents patient weights and tracks intake/output.
- Maintains a safe patient environment by responding to call lights and communicating any changes in condition to the RN.
- Delivers care that respects age, culture, language, hearing and/or vision needs; communicates at the patient/family level.
- Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
- Adheres to organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Skills and Abilities
Required
- High School Diploma or Equivalent.
- Completion of one of the following programs or equivalents: CNA, PCT, Fundamentals of Nursing program, HMH PCT Apprenticeship, or equivalent medical background (e.g., EMT, Home Health Aide, CMA, MA).
- Ability to learn quickly, adapt to changing patient needs, strong sense of accountability, teamwork, ongoing education, and dedication to patient-focused care.
