Overview
Our Brain Trauma Unit at JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute, part of Hackensack Meridian Health, seeks dedicated professionals for an acute inpatient program providing comprehensive care for adults recovering from brain injuries. The unit uses an integrated, interdisciplinary approach to support patients and their families. Our care emphasizes exceptional rehabilitation nursing, meeting medical and functional needs with expertise and compassion. The unit offers intensive rehabilitation services, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, recreational therapy, neuropsychology, social work, and rehabilitation medicine.

- Provide patient care based on age-appropriate criteria, including physical, psychosocial, education, safety, and related needs.
- Ensure safe patient outcomes through practice, judgment, and actions; maintain ongoing communication with patients, nursing colleagues, and other health care team members regarding status and care rendered.
- Take initiative to exceed job expectations, improve performance, and create opportunities.
- Participate in interdisciplinary collaboration of the patient’s plan of care from admission to discharge to ensure safe transitions and continuity of care.
- Engage in Unit/Department Performance Improvement activities as part of the care team.
- Welcome patients and verify identification bracelets; prepare patients for assessment, admission, physical examination, and procedures.
- Recognize opportunities to enhance patient satisfaction and provide care appropriate to the patient’s age on the unit.
- Obtain clinical data (temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, O2 saturation) and document findings; notify RN of abnormal results.
- Perform venipuncture for laboratory tests and ensure proper labeling and specimen processing; support timely throughput.
- Effectively operate and maintain necessary equipment; check code cart, O2, and other emergency equipment as directed.
- Apply bandages, slings, compression boots, and hypothermia blankets as directed by RN.
- Assist with patient transport and prepare patients for meals or feeding as needed.
- Check inventory and restock as directed; ensure room is prepared for admission.
- Provide direct hygiene and comfort care, including bathing, toileting, oral hygiene, incontinence care, and bed making.
- Assist with dressing/undressing and property handling; monitor return of clothing to family.
- Perform and document glucose finger sticks and collect other specimens as directed.
- Provide post-mortem care when applicable, and document patient weights and intake/output.
- Maintain a safe patient environment by promptly answering call lights and notifying RN of any condition changes.
- Modify care to meet the needs of diverse patient populations (age, culture, language, hearing/vision impairment) and communicate with patients and caregivers accordingly.
- Other duties and/or projects as assigned; adhere to organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Skills and Abilities
Required
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Completion of one of the following:
- Certified Nursing Assistant program
- Patient Care Technician program
- Fundamentals of Nursing program from an accredited school of nursing
- HMH PCT Apprenticeship Program
- Or equivalent medical background experience (e.g., EMT, Home Health Aide, CMA, MA, PCT, Nursing Assistant)
- Ability to learn quickly, adapt to changing patient needs, strong accountability, teamwork, ongoing education, and commitment to high-quality patient-focused care
Skills and Abilities
Preferred
- Experience or certification in phlebotomy and checking EKG, vital signs, and blood sugar
- At least 1 year PCT or CNA experience in a hospital setting (strongly preferred)
- Certified Nursing Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant, or PCT who has completed a PCT program including Phlebotomy, EKG, and nursing assistant training
- AHA Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers (HCP) certification
