- Provide patient care based on physical, psychosocial, education, safety, and related criteria appropriate to the age of the guests/patients served.
- Ensure effective and safe patient outcomes through practice, judgment, and critical actions.
- Maintain ongoing communication with patients, nursing colleagues, and other members of the health care team regarding patient status and care rendered.
- Show initiative to perform beyond what is required, improving job performance and creating opportunities.
- Participate in interdisciplinary collaboration of the patient’s care plan from admission to discharge to ensure safe transitioning and continuity of care.
- Participate in Unit/Department Performance Improvement activities.
- Welcomes patients and verifies identification; prepares patients for assessment, physical examination, and procedures.
- Respond to opportunities to enhance patient satisfaction and deliver care appropriate to the patient’s age.
- Obtain clinical data (temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, O2 saturation) and document findings in the patient record; notify RN of abnormal results.
- Draw venous or capillary blood using proper aseptic technique, label specimens correctly, and transport as directed.
- Perform venipuncture for laboratory tests and perform EKGs as directed.
- Maintain presence and functionality of equipment (code cart, O2, emergency equipment) as directed.
- Apply bandages, slings, compression boots, and hypothermia blankets as directed by RN.
- Assist in patient transport and with meals as needed; ensure room environment is prepared for admission.
- Provide direct hygiene and comfort care (bathing, toileting, oral hygiene, incontinent care, bed making) and assist with dressing/undressing.
- Document glucose finger sticks and other specimens as directed; provide post-mortem care when applicable.
- Obtain and document patient weights and monitor intake and output; respond promptly to call lights and communicate any changes to the RN.
- Deliver care sensitive to patient age, culture, language, and needs; communicate at the patient’s level with patient and caregiver(s).
- Perform other duties as assigned and adhere to organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Completion of one of the following:
- Certified Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant or Patient Care Technician program; or Fundamentals of Nursing program from an accredited school of nursing; or HMH PCT Apprenticeship Program; or equivalent medical background (e.g., EMT, Home Health Aide, CMA, MA, PCT, Nursing Assistant)
- Note:
Candidates not yet completing a program may be considered for the HMH PCT Apprentice Program; upon selection, hired as PCT Apprentice and transferred to Patient Care Technician after apprenticeship completion. - Ability to learn quickly, adapt to changing patient needs, strong accountability, teamwork, commitment to ongoing education, and a focus on delivering high-quality patient care.
- HCP Certification (AHA Basic Life Support) within 60 days of hire
- Experience or certification in phlebotomy, EKG, vital signs, and blood glucose monitoring preferred
- At least 1 year of PCT or CNA experience in a hospital setting is strongly preferred or eligible for the HMH PCT apprentice program
Minimum rate of $20.32 hourly.
