Join Our Brain Trauma Unit at JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute, an acute inpatient program providing comprehensive care for adults recovering from brain injuries. The unit uses an integrated, interdisciplinary approach to support patients and their families.
Our care centers on exceptional rehabilitation nursing to meet patients’ medical and functional needs with expertise and compassion. The Brain Trauma Unit offers intensive rehabilitation services including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, recreational therapy, neuropsychology, social work, and rehabilitation medicine.

Responsibilities- Provide patient care, based on physical, psychosocial, education, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the guests/patients served in assigned service.
- Provide for effective and safe patient outcomes through practice, judgment and critical actions; ongoing communication with patients, nursing colleagues and other members of the health care team regarding patient status and rendered care.
- Take self-directed or self-motivated initiative to do more than is expected, act before being required to by events, improve job performance, and/or create new opportunities.
- Participate in interdisciplinary collaboration of the patient s plan of care from admission to discharge to ensure safe transitioning and continuum of care.
- Participate in Unit/Department Performance Improvement (PI) activities; specific job functions may include but are not limited to:
- Welcomes patients and checks for proper identification bracelets.
- Prepares the patient for assessment/admission, physical examination and procedures.
- Recognizes and responds to opportunities to enhance patient satisfaction.
- Demonstrates the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients on the unit.
- Obtains clinical data (temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, O2 saturation) and documents findings in the patient record; notifies RN immediately of abnormal results.
- Draws intravenous or capillary blood from newborn through geriatric patients using proper aseptic collection techniques; labels and processes specimens to expedite throughput.
- Performs venipuncture for laboratory tests and assists with specimen collection and transport.
- Demonstrates reliability in following through with assigned responsibilities in collecting, labeling, and transporting specimens; ensures proper labeling with patient name and room number.
- Performs EKG for patients as directed.
- Maintains presence, functionality and cleanliness of equipment; checks code cart, O2 and other emergency equipment as directed.
- Applies bandages, slings, compression boots and hypothermia blankets as directed by RN.
- Assists in transporting patients to departments or units upon request.
- Assists with patient meals as needed and ensures proper feeding support.
- Checks inventory of assigned area and restocks as directed.
- Ensures room environment is prepared for admission.
- Provides direct hygiene and comfort care (bathing, toileting, oral hygiene, incontinent care, bed making).
- Assists patients with dressing/undressing and managing patient belongings with proper property checklist.
- Performs and documents glucose finger sticks and collects other specimens as directed.
- Provides post-mortem care as applicable.
- Obtains and documents patient weights and monitors intake and output.
- Maintains a safe patient environment by answering call lights promptly and communicating any changes in condition to the RN.
- Identifies needs of the patient population served and adapts care to age, culture, language, hearing/visual impairments, etc., communicating with patient and caregivers at appropriate levels.
- Other duties and/or projects as assigned and adheres to organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Skills and Abilities
Required
- High School Diploma or Equivalent.
- Completion of one of the following:
- Certified Nursing Assistant program
- Patient Care Technician program
- Fundamentals of Nursing program from an accredited school of nursing
- HMH PCT Apprenticeship Program
- Or equivalent medical background experience (e.g., EMT, Home Health Aide, CMA, MA, PCT, Nursing Assistant)
- Ability to learn quickly, adapt to changing patient needs, strong accountability, teamwork, ongoing education, and commitment to delivering high-quality care with patient focus.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred: - Experience or certification in phlebotomy and checking EKG, vital signs and blood sugar.
