An Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) provides Basic Life Support (BLS) services for both emergency and non-emergency requests for service assigned by the appropriate dispatch authority in a timely professional manner. Assures the safe and prompt transportation of patients while ensuring that the care is performed in a timely, professional manner. This is a professional job that must remain flexible and may include working in hazardous conditions and in uncontrolled environments while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

The position requires the use of critical thinking skills to assess, triage, communicate, treat and transport patients of all ages and populations in various settings, including emergency and non-emergency transport, standby and special events, and other settings where BLS services and/or care by the EMT may be provided. The EMT must be able to integrate care seamlessly with all other emergency agencies including police, fire, ALS and other BLS, as well as healthcare providers in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Patient care reports must be completed on each patient. Daily operational tasks are also required in support of the department. All actions must be in accordance with all the State of New Jersey Regulations in (N.J.A.C. 8:40) regarding Emergency Medical Technicians, and in compliance with HMH protocols, policies, and procedures for the provision of BLS services.

Responsibilities
  • Provide Basic Life Support (BLS) services for emergency and non-emergency requests as assigned by the dispatch authority.
  • Ensure safe and prompt transportation of patients and deliver care in a timely, professional manner.
  • Work in flexible environments, including potentially hazardous conditions and uncontrolled settings while using appropriate PPE.
  • Assess, triage, communicate, treat and transport patients of all ages; operate in diverse settings including standby and special events.
  • Coordinate care with police, fire, ALS, other BLS providers, and healthcare teams in inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Complete patient care reports for each patient; perform daily operational tasks to support the department.
  • Adhere to New Jersey regulations (N.J.A.C. 8:40) and to Hackensack Meridian Health protocols, policies, and procedures for BLS services.
Education, Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

Required
  • High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.
  • Introduction to Incident Command System, ICS-100 or similar ICS-100 variants.
  • ICS-200 Incident Command System, ICS-200 or related resources.
  • NIMS ICS-700.a or equivalent introduction to NIMS.
  • IS-800.D:
    National Response Framework, An Introduction.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite).

    Skills and Abilities

    Preferred
    • Two years of BLS experience; 911 experience preferred.
    Licenses and Certifications Required
    • Current NJ Emergency Medical Technician certification, or NREMT EMT-Basic certification, or state EMT certification with NJ reciprocity; eligible non-NJ EMTs must obtain NJ EMT within 6 months of hire.
    • AHA Basic Life Support Health Care Provider Certification or BLS Instructor Certification.
    • Valid Driver's License from a USA state.
    • CEVO Certified Emergency Vehicle Operator training or EVOC within 90 days of hire.
    Working Conditions

    The EMT must be capable of performing all listed duties during the assigned shift and be physically able to lift and move patients and equipment.

  • Drive an emergency vehicle in compliance with applicable laws and in all lighting and weather conditions.
  • Lift a fully loaded ambulance stretcher (approx. 350 pounds) and safely transfer to and from the ambulance with assistance as needed.
  • Carry EMS equipment (about 50 lbs.) from the vehicle to the patient as required.
  • Perform fine motor skills in a moving ambulance without causing injury or pain to patients.
  • Visually assess small details in poor lighting within a confined space (e.g., pupil assessment).
  • Walk extended distances while carrying heavy equipment.
  • Hear faint noises in uncontrolled environments (e.g., auscultating blood pressure in a moving ambulance).
  • Communicate in English clearly both verbally and in writing for patient care records and dispatch communications.
