Position: Voluntary Board Trustee / Treasurer
Location: City of Edinburgh

The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE) is seeking an accomplished finance professional to join its Board of Trustees as Treasurer.

RCPE is a registered charity dedicated to supporting doctors in pursuing careers in specialist (internal) medicine through medical examinations, education, and training. It also provides resources and guidance to facilitate lifelong professional development. With 15,000 Fellows and Members in over 100 countries – including across the UK – and covering 54 medical specialties and interests, RCPE has a strong national and international presence.

This is a unique opportunity to help shape the financial and strategic direction of a 344-year-old institution at a historic moment in its governance. Recently and for the first time in its history, RCPE have appointed non-medical professionals to its Board of Trustees, bringing fresh expertise, perspective, and insight to support the College’s long-term sustainability.

Following the successful recruitment and onboarding of three independent board members, RCPE is now seeking to appoint a Treasurer, the first non-medical professional to hold this position. This appointment represents a significant evolution in the College’s governance, reinforcing its commitment to robust financial oversight, rigorous scrutiny, and the strategic management of resources to ensure lasting impact.

We are looking for a qualified finance professional with significant experience in financial stewardship, strategic oversight, and governance to become the Treasurer and Chair of the Finance Committee. Providing strategic oversight of the College’s financial management and ensuring robust governance, you will play a critical role in safeguarding the College’s long-term sustainability by reviewing budgets, monitoring financial performance, assessing risks, and advising on investment and funding strategies.

Previous non-executive experience is not a prerequisite, provided you bring relevant experience contributing at board level and a clear understanding of governance, accountability, and strategic decision-making.

This voluntary role will provide you with a unique opportunity to contribute at the highest level to the College’s mission, shaping its financial strategy, governance, and long-term impact on the medical profession and wider community.
