founded in 2010, amis is scotland’s only national specialist charity dedicated to supporting men experiencing domestic abuse (defined as abuse between intimate/sexual partners in scotland). We support individuals aged 18+ who identify as male or anyone with concerns about such men. Amis also provides training for other services wishing to learn more about supporting male victims and engages with policymakers to highlight the need for support provision for all male victims and survivors of domestic abuse in scotland.
we are currently seeking to recruit a treasurer to our board of trustees. As treasurer, you hold all the legal responsibilities of being a regular charity trustee, as well as additional responsibilities to oversee and manage the charity's finances. You may be asked to assist with the writing of funding grants, developing new commercial partnerships, exploring the corporate & social responsibility requirements of other organisations who may wish to partner with us, and come up with ideas to generate funds to ensure our financial capabilities match our ambition.
you will also chair our finance subcommittee and work closely with our head of services and our business support officer to ensure our financial systems, policies, and reporting processes remain robust, transparent, and compliant.
the treasurer’s guidance also helps demystify finance for the wider board, allowing every trustee — regardless of their background — to engage meaningfully in financial decision‑making. This clarity and confidence strengthen the whole governance of the charity. Beyond the numbers, your contribution will directly support our frontline mission. Every sound financial decision helps us keep our helpline running, fund our outreach training and development opportunities, and pay our staff the wages they deserve for their incredible work in dealing with highly complex and emotionally challenging caseloads.
essential- a solid understanding of charity accounting principles, including restricted and unrestricted funds, accrual‑based accounts, and annual reporting requirements.
- high level of proficiency in xero accounting software, with the ability to produce clear and accurate reports.
- confidence in financial analysis and presentation, able to interpret budgets and convey key information clearly to trustees without a financial background.
- experience liaising with independent examiners or auditors, ensuring that financial records are accurate and compliant.
- an understanding of scottish charity financial policies and procedures, including expenses, financial controls, and reporting structures.
- empathy and openness to amis’s mission, with an awareness of and sensitivity and being in strong agreement with the needs of male victims of domestic abuse.
- commitment to good governance and integrity, ensuring amis continues to meet the highest standards of legal and financial stewardship.
- a willingness to undergo and the ability to pass a pvg disclosure check
- previous experience in a charity board or management role, ideally within the charity or third sector.
- familiarity with oscr and hmrc requirements, including gift aid, payroll, and statutory submissions.
there are approximately 9-12 online board meetings per year which take place via zoom, as well as one in-person annual general meeting, usually the week before christmas. Board meetings last approximately 1.5 hours. In addition, we anticipate the treasurer will need to commit 1 to 2 hours per week to the role, but this can be flexible depending on input and activity.
remunerationthe role is voluntary, although reasonable expenses for travel, etc, may be claimed.
locationthis role can be carried out entirely remotely, although ideally you would be based in scotland. It may be beneficial to be within travel distance of our head office, located on leith walk in edinburgh, although meetings here are rare (no more than once a year) to engage with trustees and employees.
board meetings are normally held monthly via zoom.
please note, as part of the legal requirements under the disclosure (scotland) act 2020, all charity trustees in scotland, including treasurers, must undergo and successfully pass a protected vulnerable groups (pvg) screening.
