Role Overview –The Engineering Technician (Roads) will produce high-quality designs, drawings, models and documentation for road and drainage schemes across a range of projects. The Engineering Technician (Roads) will collaborate with Engineers and Project Managers to deliver coordinated, buildable solutions that meet client, statutory and quality requirements.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIESDesign & Drafting
- Prepare conceptual and detailed designs for infrastructure, highway and energy schemes.
- Develop and maintain 2D/3D models and drawing sheets in AutoCAD and Civil 3D (or similar), including surfaces, corridors, feature lines and cross‑sections.
- Creation of federated 3D models to enhance coordination, collaboration, construction sequencing and innovative processes for Asset tagging. Understanding of clash detections with the aim of reducing conflicts during the construction phase
- Develop drainage and ancillary designs to relevant standards
Standards, Compliance & Approvals
- Work in both supervised and unsupervised environments ensuring that the technical content of all work completed is correct and delivered within agreed timescales and budgets.
- Develop Designs to relevant standards/guidance (e.g., DMRB, Manual for Streets, Local Authority standards/specifications).
Project Delivery
- Working within a multidisciplinary team to contribute to design, delivery plans, drawing registers and issue records; meet programme and quality milestones.
- Assist with quantities, take‑offs, preliminary cost inputs and specification notes.
- Help respond to review comments from clients, authorities and contractors.
- Support site activities (e.g., surveys, inspections, responding to RFIs), as required.
- Mentor and develop engineering staff within your team.
- Foster collaborative working and continuous professional development.
- Promote Fairhurst’s values of innovation, sustainability, and technical excellence.
- Work closely with Engineers, Technicians and Graduates to deliver coordinated outputs.
- Apply internal QA procedures, drawing standards, BIM/CDE protocols and file management best practice.
- Share good practice, contribute to lessons learned, and support continuous improvement.
- Provide technical guidance, support and training to colleagues and assist, where practicable, in mentoring and development of others.
- HNC/HND in Civil Engineering.
- Excellent working knowledge of AutoCAD, Civil3D and BIM protocols.
- Experienced in the preparation of highway design drawings including geometric design, drainage and ancillary elements.
- Technically competent in the field of highways and infrastructure design including knowledge of design standards and specifications.
- Ability to produce clear, accurate drawings, schedules and as‑built information.
- Sound knowledge of DMRB design standards and specifications.
- Ability to use and guide others on design and assessment software packages (Civils3D, Info Drain, PDS signs/lines etc)
- Excellent communication skills, particularly in technical written English
- Flexible and enthusiastic approach to working within a team structure
- Confidence and ability to take responsibility for work on large projects
- Eng Tech membership of an appropriate professional body (desirable) i.e Institution of Civil Engineers or the Chartered Institute of Highways and Transportation
