Position: Food & Life Skills Project Worker
Hours: Part-time; 7 hours per week (Wednesdays)
Salary: £29,689 pro-rata (equivalent to £15.86 per hour)
Pension: 5% employer’s contribution
Annual Leave: 32 days (pro-rata)
Location: The Broomhouse Hub, EH11 3RH
Term: 7-months fixed-term; funded to 31 Oct. 2026

We’re seeking a creative and passionate person to join our Community Learning & Development team at Space to lead the Changemakers project.
Changemakers is an exciting new food education project working with young people aged 16-24 who have barriers to employment and may have complex needs.
The Food & Life Skills Project Worker will support groups of up to 12 young people to build self-esteem and increase their independence via a programme of well-designed group-based sessions that use food education to teach life skills such as budgeting, cooking, nutrition, handling finances, numeracy, literacy, and communication.
The Changemakers sessions will run on Wednesday afternoons from 12:30-3 p.m. at The Broomhouse Hub.
We currently have funding for the project to run from April to October 2026, during which you will run two 10-week programmes, with time for recruitment and promotion before each programme.
Ideally all working hours will be competed on a Wednesday, however there is a degree of flexibility around working hours outwith the times the sessions are to be delivered.
Key tasks:- Design and deliver a series of 10 group-based sessions supporting people to develop confidence and life skills using food education as a driver
- Create detailed plans for each session outlining activities, equipment, ingredients, and timing
- Promote the Changemakers programme across networks and partner organisations such as local schools, colleges, community groups, and other voluntary organisations to recruit cohorts of suitable candidates
- Conduct initial meetings with potential learners to assess suitability, motivations, and aims
- Carry out risk assessments and create a safe but nurturing environment for learners to thrive
- Complete all administration tasks relating to the project, including collating learner registration information, updating database with detailed progress reports, recording attendance, and collating data for funder reporting
- Provide one-to-one support to learners to review individual progress and address any barriers
- Engage with external partners/suppliers/trainers to provide relevant accredited training courses or specialist topics
- Recruit, train, and support programme volunteers
- Manage the project budget
Skills:
- Knowledge of, and experience in, designing, delivering, and evaluating programmes of learning
- Commitment to and experience of supporting vulnerable young people in a compassionate, strengths-based fashion
- Experience of food preparation or production, ideally within a professional environment; or able to demonstrate how practical experience is of an equivalent level of skill
- Strong admin skills, able to gather and record appropriate data for reporting
- Excellent time management, and the ability to manage multiple tasks, use initiative to prioritise workload without close supervision
- A calm manner, able to relate to a diverse range of members in a manner which is sensitive and respectful of personal dignity
- Excellent English communications skills—listening, writing, speaking
- Confident with the use of digital devices and Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Teams
- Reliable, trustworthy and have a ‘can do’ attitude
