Overview

Consultant Obstetrician – Women’s Services, Edinburgh Royal Infirmary (RIE), Simpsons Centre for Reproductive Health (SCRH), Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

Qualifications

Applicants must have full GMC Registration and a license to practice, and be eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. Portfolio Pathway (formerly CESR) route doctors are eligible to apply for a substantive consultant post only once awarded.

Non‑UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.

Position Details

Permanent (40 hours per week) post based at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh Hospital. This is a substantive consultant post in obstetrics. The post holder will join a forward‑looking and vibrant department and will play an active role in general and high‑risk obstetrics in this tertiary obstetric unit.

The department has a national and internally recognised academic profile with an active research programme and subspecialty clinical services. The post holder will have opportunities to develop a special interest, including potential gynaecology sessions.

The post holder will have a community‑based locality antenatal caseload and will contribute to high‑risk obstetric clinics and to core obstetric inpatient and outpatient care. This role includes management responsibility for the tier 2 and 3 resident doctor rota.

The Obstetric department offers a consultant‑led service on Labour Ward, Obstetrics wards, Obstetric Triage and Caesarean section lists. There are currently 20 consultant obstetricians at the Royal Infirmary; out‑of‑hours commitment is at the Royal Infirmary, including a resident component from 20:30 to midnight and on‑call cover, with long weekend duties.

NHS Lothian is developing cross‑site services, working patterns and pathways between the RIE and St John’s Hospital. The post may include sessions at St John’s as this service development is established. Quality improvement and patient safety are priorities, with a patient‑centred multidisciplinary review process developed. All consultants contribute to adverse event reviews, guidelines, quality improvement, complaints, departmental and undergraduate teaching as part of their SPA time allocation.
