Location: City of Edinburgh

We are hiring a talented Architect, Part II Architectural Assistant or Architectural Technologist to join our team and work on a range of exciting projects in Scotland, the wider UK and overseas.

Architect / Part II Architectural Assistant / Architectural Technologist
Edinburgh city centre studio | Fixed term (12 months maternity cover) | Full time or part time considered

Ossian Architects are seeking a thoughtful and design-led Architect, Part II Architectural Assistant or Architectural Technologist to join our Edinburgh studio on a 12-month fixed-term maternity cover contract, with the potential for the role to become permanent following review.

We are a small, collaborative practice with a strong focus on existing buildings, conservation, and low-carbon design. The successful candidate will work closely with the wider studio team across a varied and engaging workload, with involvement typically spanning early design, technical development, and construction-stage input, depending on experience and role level.

This is a hands‑on role within a close-knit studio, offering the opportunity to engage deeply with projects from concept through to delivery.

The role
You will contribute to a range of projects across Scotland, the wider UK and overseas, with responsibilities likely to include:

  • Design development from feasibility and concept through to detailed proposals
  • Technical design and production information using Revit
  • Coordination with consultants, specialists and contractors
  • Site visits, inspections and support during construction
  • Participation in studio discussions around design quality, materials, sustainability and delivery

Responsibilities will evolve in line with your experience, interests and strengths.

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Design-focused, curious and thoughtful in their approach
  • Comfortable working collaboratively within a small studio environment
  • Organised, proactive and able to take responsibility for tasks
  • Interested in the careful repair, adaptation and improvement of existing buildings
  • Strong proficiency in Revit
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office
  • Clear drawing and detailing skills, appropriate to your level
  • Good communication skills and a professional approach to coordination
  • Right to work in the UK (we are unable to offer visa sponsorship)
  • Construction‑stage experience and confidence engaging with sites and contractors
  • Experience of conservation, retrofit or historic buildings
  • A strong interest in sustainability, low‑carbon design or natural materials

Working pattern
The role is based in our Edinburgh city centre studio, with an expectation of typically three days per week in the studio to support collaboration. Flexible, hybrid and part‑time working arrangements will be considered for the right candidate.
Target start date: mid‑late April 2026.

Professional development
We actively support professional development, including structured CPD, mentoring, and opportunities to take on increasing responsibility within the studio. Where there is a strong mutual fit, we are open to the role developing into a longer‑term position.
