Preventive Maintenance Mechanic

Position: PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC
To provide journeyman level skills performing maintenance and repair in the areas of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.

Description of Duties

* Performs preventative maintenance on designated buildings, which includes installing, repairing, and maintaining equipment in the areas of lighting, plumbing, and some mechanical systems.

* Responds to trouble calls in assigned buildings and throughout campus as needed.

* Ensures that all assigned equipment and devices are functioning properly in designated buildings by replacing parts as needed and cleaning/replacing based established schedule or need.

* Disposes of all items to be discarded per established Environmental Health and Safety procedures.

* Performs daily inspections of interior lighting, equipment, and belts for various pieces of mechanical equipment in the designated buildings and replaces/repairs as needed.

* Inspects condition of mechanical equipment and replace as needed.

* Assists other maintenance personnel, when required.

* Maintains and cleans mechanical rooms as needed and services the room's floor drains.

* Maintains and cleans elevators and shafts.

* Replaces worn components in designated equipment before mechanical breakdown occurs.

* May serves as a backup for Preventive Maintenance Leader along with campus police and Environmental Health and Safety staff to elevator issues/malfunctions including entrapment.

* May be responsible for executing a series of steps to reset elevators to their normal operating condition and to make service calls to Elevator Company as needed.

* Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervises assigned staff.

Required Education

10th Grade or equivalent. Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.

Preferred Education

Vocational School training in one or more of the building trades.

Licenses/Certifications

As condition of employment this position requires the applicant to be authorized to operate a University-Owned Vehicle for Official University Business. Per University of Texas System Policy 157, applicants will be subject to a motor vehicle record check for their most recent thirty-six (36) month history. Out of State Drivers are required to submit a 36-month history MVR from their prior State of residence(s).

Required Experience

Two (2) years of skilled/journeyman-level experience in any trade profession.

Skilled use of the tools of the trade.

Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Accuracy in the tools and techniques of the trade.

Exposure to outside environments, hot, dry, wet, cold; some work in restricted spaces, exposure to dust, some duties and working conditions may create bodily strain and discomfort. Duties may involve the lifting and moving of heavy objects, stooping, crawling, climbing, reaching, and other activities requiring physical exertion. Danger of falls, chemicals, mechanical, electrical shock and burns, and hazards and conditions inherent to the trade or assignment.
