Overview

The Diesel Mechanic performs skilled mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of diesel and gasoline-powered motor vehicles. This position will also require maintenance and repair of diesel powered generators and diesel power equipment. Work involves diagnosing malfunctions in light and heavy motorized equipment, removing and replacing or rebuilding worn or broken parts, and maintaining records of work performed. The employee is also responsible for maintaining inventories of replacement parts and supplies.

Diagnoses, services, installs, and maintains vehicles in the county fleet, including heavy equipment, trucks, and other road equipment. Maintains records of work performed and parts used on all equipment. Examines, troubleshoots electrical and mechanical problems using standard testing procedures and computer equipment. Diagnose, test, adjust and repair systems of diesel powered generators and equipment. Travels to job-sites for emergency repairs when needed.

Performs complete tear down and rebuild of diesel and gas engines, transmissions, clutches, brakes, radiators, heating, air conditioner systems, and electrical and hydraulic systems as necessary. Performs motor overhauls on gasoline and diesel-powered engines; performs major and minor engine tune-ups and adjustments. Installs rebuilt motors; adjusts and makes repairs to gasoline and diesel-powered engines. Rebuilds or replaces worn or defective parts.

Performs major and minor mechanical repairs and adjustments on power drive, brake, steering, electrical, fuel, cooling, and related systems on light and heavy motorized equipment and vehicles. Repairs and adjusts hydraulic and vacuum-operated systems; replaces hydraulic motors, hoses, and fittings. Replaces alternators, regulators, starters, wires, and gauges as necessary. Maintains replacement parts and supply inventories, preparing purchase requisitions as required.

Regular and punctual attendance is required. Performs related work as assigned.

For clarity, the duties include diagnosing malfunctions, repairing and rebuilding parts, maintaining records and inventories, servicing and maintaining county fleet vehicles and heavy equipment, troubleshooting electrical and mechanical problems, performing engine rebuilds and tune-ups, after-hours work when needed, and completing repairs on hydraulic, electrical, and related systems.

Qualifications
  • Graduation from a high school or equivalent (GED).
  • Two (2) years of experience in diesel engine repair.
Certificates, Licenses and Registration
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Diesel Certification preferred.
  • Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with N endorsement issued by the State of Texas preferred.
  • Must be able to be insured by the County’s insurance carrier.
  • Requires considerable knowledge of the standard practices, tools, materials and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of a variety of gasoline, diesel-powered vehicles, mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Requires general knowledge of the operating principles of diesel engines, and of the standard mechanical components of automotive and related equipment.
  • Requires general knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of automotive equipment repair work and large scale shop operations.
  • Requires working knowledge of the principles of internal combustion engines and hydraulic systems.
  • Requires the ability to perform tasks requiring heavy physical effort occasionally in inclement weather.
  • Requires the ability to prepare and maintain simple records.
  • Requires the ability to perform the manual labor associated with major mechanical repair work.
  • Requires the ability to use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
  • Requires the ability to use computers for word processing and/or accounting purposes.
  • Requires the ability to be accountable for inventory/property management.
  • Requires the ability to use highly technical computer applications.
  • Requires the ability to use computers for data entry.
  • Requires the ability to use or repair light, medium, or heavy equipment and machinery, such as vehicles or commercial mowers.
