- Provide one-on-one coaching and peer support to students with lived experience in foster care.
- Conduct ongoing case management, including check‑ins, goal setting, referrals, and documentation.
- Assist students in accessing academic, financial, basic needs, and community resources.
- Assist with the planning, implementation, and assessment of program activities and initiatives.
- Provide guidance, mentorship, and day‑to‑day leadership for the student peer coach team.
- Support the creation and facilitation of workshops, outreach events, and community‑building activities.
- Maintain accurate records and contribute to program reports, evaluations, and continuous improvement efforts.
- Facilitate presentations, information sessions, and tabling efforts to raise campus and community awareness of program services.
- Build and maintain relationships with campus partners, community agencies, and state resource programs that support foster‑connected students.
- Represent the program at recruitment events and collaborative meetings for prospective college students.
- Develop and distribute a monthly program newsletter with updates, resources, and success stories.
- Assist with creating educational materials, promotional content, and digital communications.
- Maintain an organized collection of state, community, and institutional resources for student use.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Must be admitted to a graduate degree program.
- Must be in good academic standing.
- Be registered full‑time for the respective semester – nine (9) semester credit hours during the fall semester, nine (9) semester credit hours during the spring semester, or three (3) semester credit hours during the summer session or be registered in the required number of semester credit hours to fulfill the only remaining requirements of the degree plan.
- Must be admitted to a UTRGV graduate degree program.
- Must be in good academic standing.
- Be registered full‑time for the respective semester – nine (9) semester credit hours during the fall semester, nine (9) semester credit hours during the spring semester, or three (3) semester credit hours during the summer session or be registered in the required number of semester credit hours to fulfill the only remaining requirements of the degree plan. Must be enrolled in a graduate program at the time of employment.
- Strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently, collaborate effectively on a team, and uphold confidentiality.
- Understanding of trauma‑informed practices and strengths‑based approaches.
- Experience facilitating presentations or workshops.
- Interest in program development, student success, or social services.
- Typically, 20 hours per week with some evening or weekend commitments for events.
The Office of the Dean of Students is looking for a Graduate Assistant to join our offices in Brownsville or Edinburg to support the implementation, coordination, and leadership of a comprehensive program serving current and prospective college students with lived experience in foster care. The GA plays a key role in providing peer‑to‑peer guidance, holistic support, and navigation of resources to promote student success, sense of belonging, and persistence.
