Performs complex accounting work. Work involves preparing financial statements, records, documents, and reports. May specialize in some phase of accounting work such as grants accounting. May provide guidance to others. Works under general supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Responsibilities

Prepare financial statements, reports, schedules, and exhibits; and prepare general journal entries and/or audit them for accuracy.

Prepare periodic analyses of fund balances, revenues, and expenditures; and prepare technical reports on estimates and budget items.

Audit accounting and financial documents for accuracy and compliance with County policies and procedures and State and Federal laws and regulations.

Classify, code, post, and balance financial and accounting documents and records.

Review and maintain accounting records, such as expenditure, expense, revenue, fund, and appropriation records.

Research and reconcile discrepancies in accounts, bank statements, or appropriation balances; and report findings.

Assist in making recommendations for improvements, adaptations, or revisions to the accounting system and accompanying procedures.

May process payments related to grants and/or audit them for accuracy.

May provide guidance to others.

Perform related work as assigned.

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in accounting or finance with a minimum of 15 hours of accounting courses.

Minimum 2 years of experience in accounting.

Governmental accounting experience preferred.

Certificates, Licenses and Registration

Must have a current valid Texas motor vehicle operator’s license.

Must be able to be insured by the County’s insurance carrier.

Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and procedures affecting the maintenance of accounting records and automated accounting systems.

Skill in the use of personal computer and related office equipment; standard software applications (e.g., Microsoft Word and Excel); and 10-key calculator.

Ability to interpret and apply accounting theory; to interpret laws and regulations; to work accurately with numerical detail; to analyze, consolidate, and interpret accounting data; to establish and maintain effective working relationships; to communicate effectively; and to provide guidance to others.
