Job Description

Americas Tax Manager is a key member of our Group Tax team. Reporting to the Group Tax Director, based in the UK, the role involves focusing on managing compliance and support of the business in the US and Canada and provision of commercial tax advice for the Americas.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

Management of the US corporate tax compliance process:

  • Review and manage the outsourced corporate income tax compliance activities to ensure accurate and timely filed tax returns
  • Ensure compliance with tax legislation in all relevant jurisdictions with support from external tax advisors
  • Gathering of appropriate tax package information and tracking the status of compliance milestones
  • Manage tax correspondence, audits, enquiries with tax authorities
  • Preparation of quarterly estimates, filing and payments

Manage corporate tax affairs of the Smiths Detection Canadian business, including liaising with advisors, managing tax issues associated with repatriation of funds, and providing advice to local Finance team as required

Manage corporate tax accounting and reporting:

  • Provision calculation including work paper/schedule preparation, calculation of temporary and permanent differences for US. Oversight of the same for Canada.
  • Contribute to agreeing the overall tax charge, assets, and liabilities for reporting to Group for Interim and Year-end reporting with external auditors
  • Ensure appropriate tax accounting in individual entity accounts including reconciliations

Tax advice and planning

  • Builds internal relationships to partner with the business and demonstrate knowledge of the business
  • Monitoring legislative developments and the impact to the business
  • Providing tax advice and input as appropriate in connection with commercial activities
  • Proactively identify, manage, monitor, and mitigate regional tax risks
  • Ensure compliance with Group tax strategy and policies

Undertaking ad-hoc tax projects as required

Qualifications
  • Education Requirements: Minimum bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting or related field of study. Prefer master’s in taxation or equivalent
  • Requirements:
  • Ability to analyse and review statutes, regulations, and case law, and then extract data and make appropriate recommendations
  • Experience of FDII, BEAT and other US regimes
  • Experience in international taxation
  • Excellent project management skills with a strong sense of ownership and the ability to manage multiple priorities and conflicting demands
  • Good communication skills and strong team player with an ability to work across teams in various locations
  • Experience managing advisors
  • A self-confident and personable team player with good networking, relationship management and communication skills, comfortable with ambiguity
  • Demonstrates a proactive, flexible hands-on approach taking the initiative to identify issues and develop solutions
