Job Summary

The Certified Medical Assistant provides clinical support to physicians and mid‑level providers, guides patients, and ensures compliance with OSHA/CLIA and HIPAA regulations. This highly visible position creates a positive impression with patients and visitors and supports patient flow throughout the department.

Responsibilities
  • Prepares patients for exam and acquires vital signs, weight, general history, and current medication list when required.
  • Provides patient care and clinical support during exam, including needle removal, stimulator application, needle count, venipuncture, injections, and EKGs.
  • Documents all clinical findings and patient responses, including history, medications, vital signs, weight, and testing results.
  • Collects and provides completed laboratory/test findings, intake forms, physician referrals, diagnostic imaging, or cardiopulmonary test results to the provider.
  • Provides instruction to patients under the direction of the provider.
  • Registers patients and performs pre‑certification tasks, including insurance verification and pre‑authorization, and follows up on additional authorizations.
  • Handles customer service and problem resolution, addresses routine patient problems and complaints, and escalates as needed.
  • Schedules surgical, non‑surgical procedures, tests, therapy, referrals, and appointments, ensuring accuracy of data and communicating updates to staff and patients.
  • Collects patient co‑pays, co‑insurance, and deductibles, maintains monthly/quarterly record statistics, and codes services for charge reconciliation.
  • Coordinates multiple phone lines or InBasket communications, screens calls, receives information, and transfers calls to appropriate staff.
  • Supports co‑workers with front‑desk coverage, answering phones, running errands, and transporting patients.
  • Performs medical records tasks, including chart retrieval, storage, filing, scanning, and maintaining appropriate computer downtime procedures.
  • Maintains adequate supplies in exam rooms and workstations, cleans and disinfects rooms, and reports equipment malfunctions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education, Credentials, Licenses
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Secretarial related courses.
  • Graduate of an accredited medical assisting school.
  • Successfully completed registration/certification exam.
Specialized Knowledge
  • Medical terminology.
  • Computer fluency/literacy.
  • Communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Organization and prioritization skills.
Experience

3 years related experience in a medical office setting, including customer service/receptionist/registration, scheduling, filing, telephone etiquette, patient billing, and computer service.

Desired Qualifications
  • Associate degree or certificate.
  • Experience with electronic medical records software, e.g., EPIC.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Outlook.
