Job Summary

Upon physicians’ orders, assesses patients’ pulmonary status, determines appropriateness of orders and administers various modes supportive or restorative of therapy, with or without medical gases or pharmacological agents to restore normal cardio‑pulmonary function. Conducts diagnostic tests to determine the existence or extent of cardio‑pulmonary disease. Demonstrates respect, dignity, kindness, and empathy in each encounter with all patients, families, visitors, and other employees regardless of cultural background.

Job Duties
  • Administers safe, effective respiratory treatments and medical gas therapy consistent with current standards of practice to restore normal cardio‑pulmonary function.
  • Maintains equipment and supplies to ensure decontamination, disinfection, and sterilization.
  • Maintains a clean, safe and organized work environment.
  • Follows duties in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Completes all required safety, infection control, and age‑specific programs as prescribed.
  • Documents and communicates effects and effectiveness of therapy to ensure continuity of care.
  • Mentors students from clinical affiliates.
  • Assesses patients’ cardiopulmonary status and implements a respiratory care plan appropriate for the patients’ age group.
  • Compares ordered therapy to patients’ status, recommending more appropriate, cost‑effective, or less invasive therapy as needed.
  • Explains purpose and benefits of therapy, teaching patients proper techniques for effective therapy.
  • Initiates and maintains cardiopulmonary resuscitation (BLS).
  • Provides mechanical ventilator support as ordered by physicians.
  • Under indirect supervision, conducts diagnostic tests to determine cardiopulmonary function.
  • Performs bedside spirometry for the PFT lab when needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Customer Service and Professionalism
  • Accountable for behavior and promotes customer satisfaction using AIDET methodology.
  • Maintains professional conduct and confidentiality of PHI.
  • Attends staff meetings, participates in training programs, and completes annual competencies.
  • Stays up to date with system information through written and electronic communications.
  • Works within the Sleep Disorders Team but can function independently when necessary.
Qualifications
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
  • Current mandatory certification to practice Respiratory Therapy in the state of employment.
  • Associate degree in applied science or equivalent.
  • Maintain credential per NBRC Continuing Competency; failure may result in transfer to Respiratory Technician until reinstatement.
  • ACLS certification (post‑hire if not already certified).
