Position: Community Service Worker I (Streets)

Overview

Do you have previous construction experience? Are you interested in snow plowing? Join our dedicated and hardworking team of laborers! We are currently accepting applications for a Community Service Worker I position in the Street Maintenance Division. Utilizing a working knowledge of light automotive, heavy construction, and mechanized equipment, this position operates equipment and performs a variety of labor-intensive manual work pertaining to the maintenance of roads, bridges, and their appurtenances.

Duties also include removal of snow and ice from streets and sidewalks, excavating, mowing, brush cutting, weed trimming, compressor, and jack hammer operation, crack sealing, spray patching, catch basin cleaning, asphalt paving, concrete work, and more!

Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED, etc.)
  • Ability to report to the Central Maintenance Facility (910 Forest Street, Eau Claire) within 45 minutes for snow removal and other emergency operations
  • Possess or obtain (within six months of hire) and maintain a valid Class B CDL with no air brake restrictions
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience in street/highway construction, general construction including patching of asphalt/concrete, working with tools involved in street repairs/construction, operating heavy equipment, and/or snow removal with a single axle plow truck and/or heavy equipment

Typical work schedule
  • Regular hours:

Job Description

The Street Maintenance Division is one of five divisions of the Community Services Department. Under general supervision, this position performs semi-skilled work through both manual labor and by operation of light and heavy equipment, as directed, for the Community Services Department. General orders for assignments are designated by supervisor and transmitted verbally, electronically, or in writing, but the position is expected to work with a degree of autonomy in most areas of responsibility.

Details of work are reviewed through personal inspection or discussion with supervision. This position may occasionally direct a small number of laborers assigned to help on specific tasks. A Community Service Worker I may be assigned to a certain division, but can be moved to assist another division to complete a task/project as needed.

Essential Functions
  • Utilizing a working knowledge of light automotive, heavy construction, and mechanized equipment, performs a variety of labor-intensive tasks (concerned with maintenance) such as excavating, mowing, brush cutting, weed trimming, compressor and jack hammer operation, catch basin cleaning, shoveling or raking of asphalt/concrete, installing concrete forms, finishing concrete, handling concrete rings, metal castings, and rebuilding appurtenances within streets and the utility system.
  • Must have a working knowledge of the laws and ordinances regulating the operation of motor vehicles as well as basic knowledge of the tools, methods, and materials used in maintenance activities.
  • Operates single, tandem, and quad-axle dump trucks, light trucks, and other gasoline and diesel-powered equipment safely and economically.
  • Operates mechanical equipment and attachments on trucks and other equipment such as hoists, pumps, winches, spreaders, snowplows, brooms, snow blowers, mowers, etc.
