Responsibilities

  • Actively manages inmate behavior and activities to ensure inmates obey the rules; observes and supervises inmates from stations or by patrolling cell blocks, corridors, dormitories, or work areas; maintains order, safety, and security relating to the confinement of inmates defined by Wisconsin State Statutes and the US Constitution; searches inmates and inspects cells, recreation areas, and other activity areas for unauthorized objects or materials.
  • Interprets and enforces institutional procedures, rules, and regulations; admits and discharges inmates; records inmate demographic information; photographs and fingerprints inmates; receives bail bond monies and fine payments; interprets and complies with all bond conditions and commitment orders; maintains counts of inmates in assigned areas; manages records of inmate funds and personal property.
  • Adheres to strict safety and security rules and regulations; controls all access to the jail; allows authorized individuals access to inmates; ensures that inmates are available for all scheduled court appearances and other appointments; escorts and supervises inmate access to educational, recreational, religious, library services, and other activities; ensures compliance with all procedures and schedules for meals, laundry, cleaning, maintenance, inspection, and inmate activities;

    answers or properly refers all inquiries concerning inmates; prevents and documents damage to jail property and facilities.
  • Responds to safety and security incidents and other emergency situations; breaks up fights; physically restrains and controls resisting and uncooperative inmates; practices constructive interpersonal skills to obtain maximum cooperation with minimum coercion; writes reports for incidents or disciplinary actions.
  • Responds to inmate concerns, needs, and medical emergencies; interprets individuals’ mental and physical condition to determine best course of action for resolution; performs emergency first aid; operates emergency equipment; reports incidents to medical staff; remains calm and performs effectively under stressful conditions.
  • Pursues inmates attempting escape; searches visitors; participates in administrative and disciplinary hearings; administers drug and alcohol testing; transports and assists in the supervision of residents traveling outside the facility.
  • Provides effective and credible testimony in a court of law; thoroughly reviews case facts in preparation of testimony.
  • Proficiently utilizes police related equipment as warranted, such as cameras, weapons, radios, driving of emergency vehicles, tear gas and gas mask, and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
  • Assists in peer instruction or training.
  • Carries out any lawful order or duty as prescribed by the Sheriff.
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Citizen of the United States.
  • Appointment will be conditional upon successful completion of a criminal background check resulting in no felony convictions in any jurisdiction unless the judgment or conviction has been reversed or a complete pardon has been granted.
  • Fingerprinting will be kept on file for identification purposes.
  • Position will be subject to pre-hire, random, and post-accident drug and alcohol testing during the course of employment.
  • Position will require a pre-employment physical, audiogram, and testing required to wear Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).
  • Position will require a psychological examination.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Possess Wisconsin Jail Officer Certification or obtain certification within twelve (12) months of hire and maintain certification thereafter.
  • As a condition of continued employment, attend 24 hours of annual ongoing training in law enforcement/corrections.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two (2) years post-secondary education in a related field.
  • Correctional officer experience or equivalent human services experience.
  • Ability to fluently speak Spanish, sign language, or other foreign language as a secondary language.
  • CPR/First Aid Certification.
  • Paid or volunteer experience with a professional organization that provides training in a relevant service-related field.
