Are you majoring in science-related fields? Are you looking for an internship for this summer? Then check out this amazing opportunity! We are currently accepting applications for a Utilities Intern in the Utilities Division of the Community Services Department for the summer. This internship will have you performing technical analysis of water and wastewater on a daily basis, conducting soil sampling, maintaining records/results, operating various equipment, and more!

Requirements
  • University or college student currently enrolled in a biology, chemistry, water resources, environmental public health, or related program
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license
  • At least 18 years of age

Length of internship:
Approximately June to August. Hours are typically 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Final date to receive applications:

JOB DESCRIPTION POSITION SCOPE

Under general supervision and training, performs technical analysis of water and wastewater on a daily basis as a matter of control in the operation of the Water Treatment Plant, Water Distribution System, and Wastewater Treatment Plant. This intern must have a working knowledge of acceptable chemical analysis methods as applied to water and wastewater analysis and a practical knowledge of the principles, methods, materials and practices of quantitative and qualitative analysis.

Also, the position is required to have a practical knowledge of standard water and wastewater treatment methods, processes and equipment with the ability and skill to use laboratory equipment and supplies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Evaluates laboratory results and makes recommendations to their supervisor.
  • Possesses an understanding of Federal and State regulatory codes relating to water and wastewater.
  • Acquires and demonstrates standard operating procedures.
  • Works independently on plant research and process studies.
  • Prepares and standardizes necessary reagents for water and wastewater analysis.
  • Knowledge of applicable local environmental standards.
  • Performs sampling and analysis of water and wastewater as required.
  • Maintains accurate records of work performed and results obtained.
  • Handles hazardous chemicals in a safe and efficient manner while testing.
  • Performs soil sampling in agricultural fields.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Performs related duties as required.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/CERTIFICATIONS
  • Must be a university or college student currently enrolled in a Biology, Chemistry, Water Resources, Environmental Public Health, or related program.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.

  • Maintains prompt, predictable, and regular physical attendance.

  • Must be able to concentrate and perform accurately.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment is expected to be in a plant setting most of the time, but some field work will be expected. This position may require you to work outdoors in extreme temperatures, rain, and heat. You may be required to walk long distances outdoors, perform soil sampling, perform water sampling, and work around plant equipment. The physical demand for this position is classified as light with lifting on occasion a maximum of 20 lbs.

and frequent lifting or pushing of 10 lbs. maximum.
