Position Overview
The Juvenile Detention Center Worker supervises juveniles held in secure detention and assists in providing services for their care. This position maintains a secure and safe environment and enforces the policies and procedures established for the Northwest Regional Juvenile Detention Center in accordance with laws and regulations governing secure detention of juveniles.
Key Responsibilities- Manage and interact with juveniles, individually or in groups, to provide a positive rehabilitative influence; demonstrate leadership by being a positive role model for youth and treating all persons with dignity and respect.
- Apply attentive and careful observation to individual and group behaviors daily; screen and evaluate juveniles for signs of abuse, behavioral problems, alcohol and drug abuse or withdrawal, security risk and psychological needs; identify and take appropriate action with all juveniles that appear mentally or physically ill; enforce regulations and behavior management policies related to the security and operation of the facility;
document observations in compliance with laws and regulations. - Admit and discharge juveniles according to established procedures; record all necessary information; maintain required documentation.
- Evaluate potentially dangerous situations and make critical and sound judgments and decisions on how to diffuse; respond promptly and effectively in emergency situations; use appropriate techniques to calm disruptive juvenile residents.
- Provide for health, safety, and recreation needs of juveniles in detention; comply with all procedures and schedules for meals, laundry, cleaning, maintenance, and inspections; distribute meals, clothing, and linens; receive, verify, and dispense resident medications as instructed; provide and supervise juveniles' access to educational and recreational activities; provide transportation to juveniles for court and off-site appointments and activities.
- Demonstrate effective case management services to juveniles in the 180 Program; conduct home, school, and work site visits; coordinate juvenile’s daily program activities.
- Perform other related duties as required or assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two (2) years of work experience providing care, supervision, or custody of children within juvenile justice, group home, shelter care, or foster care environments.
- OR Two (2) years of work experience within the juvenile justice system.
- OR Post high school education with courses in social work, psychology, sociology, or related field.
- Eighteen (18) years of age or older upon appointment.
- Appointment will be conditional upon successful completion of a caregiver check and criminal background check resulting in no felony convictions in any jurisdiction unless the judgment or conviction has been reversed or a complete pardon has been granted.
- Position will be subject to pre-hire, random, and post-accident drug and alcohol testing during the course of employment.
- Position will require a pre-employment physical and audiogram.
- Position will require fingerprinting and a search of local, state, and national fingerprint records.
- Must have valid driver’s license, an acceptable driving record, and access to private transportation for work-related duties.
- Must possess and maintain personal automobile insurance in the amount of $100,000/$300,000.
- Completed the Basic Juvenile Detention Officer Training or ability to complete training within twelve (12) months of hire as a condition of continued employment.
- As a condition of continued employment, will be required to complete 24 hours of annual recertification training.
- Two (2) years of post-secondary education in a related field.
- Ability to fluently speak Spanish, sign language, or other foreign language as a secondary language.
- CPR/First Aid Certification.
- Paid or volunteer experience with a professional organization that provides training in a relevant service-related field.
