- Monday - Friday
- Full‑time, 40 hours per week
- First shift (7:30 am to 4:00 pm)
- Location:
On‑site at the East Windsor Repair facility.
In order to be selected for interview, candidates must:
- Hold a current and valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tank endorsement.
- Produce a copy of their CDL Class A or B with tank endorsement and a valid Medical Examiner’s Card (MEC) at time of interview.
- Be willing to accept emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, whenever their services are needed and mandatory winter overtime from November 1 through April 30.
- Be willing to accept emergency duty assignments at heights on a bucket truck, and perform high voltage repairs to highway lighting and traffic signals.
- Have a 20‑mile residency from the posted job location.
- Bring a copy of their Master Application at the time of interview.
- Participate in a practicum to evaluate skills and qualifications.

Purpose of Job Class (Nature of Work)This class is accountable for performing a variety of skilled tasks at less than the journeyperson level in construction, maintenance and repair of state roadsides, roadways, bridges, airports, and other departmental facilities; operates and maintains complex mechanical equipment.
Examples of DutiesExamples include:
- Operating trucks such as elevation platforms, line marking machines, concrete saws, core drills, 12‑22 foot flail mowers, front‑end loaders, hand‑operated pavement marking machines, mechanical catch basin cleaning.
- Using equipment such as power‑driven rollers, power pickup sweepers, shotcrete, gunite machines, tilt‑bed trailers, vactors, skid‑steer with attachments.
- Performing tasks like drainage pipe setting, driving wing trucks with plows, construction, maintenance, mechanical repair, electrical, carpentry, masonry, welding, automotive and heavy equipment mechanical repair, plumbing, painting, test boring, tree climbing, inspection of VIP projects, radio monitoring, and more.
Requires considerable knowledge of construction and maintenance techniques, understanding of materials, oral and written communication skills, ability to use and repair complex equipment, keep shop records, use shop tools, understand instructions, and utilize computer software.
Minimum Qualifications – General ExperienceTwo (2) years of experience in construction, landscaping, commercial driving, snow plowing, maintenance and repair of roadsides, roadways, bridges, or airports, involving operation and care of mechanical equipment.
Minimum Qualifications – Substitutions AllowedGraduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma in a maintenance trade may substitute for the general experience.
Preferred QualificationsExperience operating an over‑the‑fence mower.
Special RequirementsMay be required to possess and retain appropriate licenses, permits and/or certifications; willingness to accept emergency duties.
Character RequirementsBackground investigation may be conducted for airport positions.
Physical RequirementsMust have adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, vision and hearing; physical examination required.
Working ConditionsExposure to extreme weather, heavy lifting, dangerous road and traffic conditions, heights, poison ivy, insect bites, loud machinery, possible asbestos program, protective equipment.
