We are seeking a passionate Special Education High School Teacher to provide specialized instruction to students with disabilities in grades 10–12 (ages 15–22). The teacher develops and implements Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), adapts curriculum, and supports students’ academic, social, and behavioral growth while ensuring compliance with special education laws and school policies.
Responsibilities- Instruction & Curriculum - Provide differentiated instruction for students with diverse learning needs.
- Adapt general education curriculum to align with individual student abilities and goals.
- Conduct ongoing assessments and adjust instruction accordingly.
- Use evidence-based instructional strategies and assistive technologies as appropriate.
- Support development of academic, social, and life skills.
- Draft, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs); assess performance and track student progress throughout the school year.
- Schedule and conduct IEP meetings with parents, teachers, specialists, partnering agencies, and administrators to review progress, placement, and programming.
- Maintain required documentation and meet all compliance deadlines.
- Design and maintain a positive, structured classroom environment that supports learning, safety, and student development.
- Implement Behavioral Intervention Plans (BIPs) when necessary.
- Promote positive behavior while teaching self-advocacy, independence, and social skills.
- Collaborate professionally with program staff and school personnel.
- Oversee, lead, and mentor para educators working directly with students.
- Participate in professional development related to special education practices.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding students, families, staff, and program information.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education and Building Administration.
- Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate or ability to obtain one.
- Special Education endorsement required
- Previous successful teaching experience with students with disabilities preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of state and federal special education law and strong IEP writing skills.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
- Ability to differentiate instruction and support diverse learning needs.
- Safety-Care and Ukeru certification preferred.
- Experience with AAC devices and PECS training preferred.
- Excellent attendance and punctuality required.
The job functions require the following physical demands:
- Occasional lifting (up to 50 pounds); carrying, pushing and/or pulling; some running; some climbing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; and significant reaching, handling, speaking, writing, hearing, and fine finger dexterity; frequent standing, walking, and sitting.
- Crisis management of students in emotional or physical dysregulation.
- Assistance with student self care such as toileting, feeding, and use of medical equipment such as lifts, braces, standers, and chairs.
