In the ICU of a hospital, patients are often in critical condition and need constant monitoring and care. ICU nurses review data from special equipment to track a patient’s heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, and other vitals. They also carry out more traditional nursing duties such as administering medications and communicating with patients regarding their condition.
Essential Functions
- Performs a thorough and timely assessment of patient’s condition including physical, psychological, social, and rehabilitative aspects.
- Identifies problems/nursing needs including discharge needs.
- Intervenes appropriately to address identified problems and needs. Evaluates effectiveness of care and revises plan if necessary.
- Transcribes, verifies, and carries out physician orders in an accurate and timely manner.
- Manages time efficiently/sets priorities appropriately.
- Initiates and effectively maintains IV therapy.
- Follows the 5 “rights” when administering medications.
- Coordinates patient care and verifies, coordinates, and carries out physician orders accurately.
- Coordinates interdepartmental activities (i.e. lab, radiology, etc.) to ensure timely, efficient care.
- Coordinates interdepartmental transfer smoothly and efficiently.
- Communicates and coordinates with Case Manager to ensure timely discharge, patient satisfaction, and quality care along the continuum of care.

Minimum Education/Certifications
Graduate of an accredited program in nursing.
Current Registered Nurse license to practice in the state of NJ.
Certifications required: BLS (American Heart Association). ACLS - Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Certification preferred.
Minimum Work Experience
2 years or more experience in an acute care setting preferred.
Vent Care Experience.
