Pay: $34.91 – $40.06 (upon meeting progression step requirements)

Job Summary

Michigan State University Infrastructure Planning and Facilities invites applications for an Air Conditioning (A/C) & Refrigeration Mechanic. The role involves all aspects of maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and installing chillers, air conditioning systems, and mechanical refrigeration equipment, as well as associated controls.

Job Responsibilities
  • Maintain large chillers that provide chilled water for air conditioning – 30%
  • Maintain walk‑in coolers and freezers – 30%
  • Work on rack refrigeration systems – 20%
  • Maintain variable refrigerant flow and split air‑conditioning units – 10%
  • Perform refrigeration tracking and documentation; communicate via email, training, meetings, and professional development – 10%

The position also includes interpreting blueprints, estimating time and material, stocking, maintaining, and operating a university service vehicle, and carrying an on‑call cell phone on a weekly rotating basis.

Minimum Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of technical training and experience.
  • Completion of an applicable trade‑specific Trades Helper program, approved apprenticeship, or associate degree or equivalent education/experience.
  • Five years’ experience in commercial refrigeration and air‑conditioning installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting, with the ability to independently perform duties.
  • EPA 608 Universal Certification.
  • State of Michigan Contractor’s License with endorsements in refrigeration (#4) and Limited Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (#7) (to receive progression increases at and after six months).
  • Expert knowledge of trade methods, materials, tools, safety precautions.
  • Expert knowledge of applicable building codes, rules, and regulations.
  • Valid operator’s license.
  • Must provide own tools.
  • Frequent lifting 26 to 75 pounds; occasional lifting over 75 pounds.
Desired Qualifications

State of Michigan Mechanical Contractor License with endorsements #4, #7, or #8, plus more than five years experience with large commercial systems, chillers, split systems, walk‑in coolers, freezers, growth chambers, and ammonia refrigeration systems. Experience with smaller systems (window A/C, refrigerators, ice machines), working with customers, other mechanics, and basic PC skills.

Strong technical, problem‑solving, and communication skills; a lifelong learner focused on innovative solutions aligning with university goals.
