Michigan State University Infrastructure Planning and Facilities invites applications for the position of HVAC Mechanic and we need your help.

This position will repair, troubleshoot, maintain, alter, and install heating, ventilating, and air conditioning components and their associated control systems; these systems consist of: pneumatic, electric, and electronic components; respond to building service calls; performs scheduled preventive maintenance on HVAC equipment; conducts building checks; provides necessary assistance to other trades people and departments; interprets blueprints, diagrams, sketches, and job specifications; completes necessary paperwork to requisition material and parts.

This position will also interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches, and job specifications; estimate time and material to be used on the job; stock, maintain, and may operate a University service vehicle. This position may carry an on‑call cell phone on a weekly rotating basis.

  • 40% - Work directly with the customer responding to projects, building trouble calls, retro-commissioning service calls, and performing repairs.
  • 20% - Perform preventative maintenance of commercial HVAC systems.
  • 20% - Installation and servicing of commercial HVAC systems and controls.
  • 10% - Mechanical system inspection.
  • 10% - Correspondence through email, training, meetings and professional development.

PLEASE NOTE:

This search includes two separate postings for HVAC Mechanic and HVAC/ Boiler Mechanic. Applicants who meet the qualifications for both levels and wish to be considered for both positions must submit an application to each posting. Applying to only one will limit consideration to that level.

Minimum Requirements
  • Completion of a high school education or an equivalent combination of technical training and experience.
  • Successful completion of an applicable trade-specific Trades Helper program, or completion of an approved apprenticeship program, or an associate degree, or equivalent education/experience.
  • Five years’ experience in the trade that includes five years of experience in commercial heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) installation, maintenance and troubleshooting and demonstrated ability to independently perform the duties and responsibilities of the classification, or equivalent experience.
  • Must pass an assessment to receive progression step increases at and after the 18-month mark.
  • Expert knowledge of applicable building codes, rules, and regulations (local, state and federal).
  • Expert knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, equipment, occupational hazards, and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Possession of a valid vehicle operator's license.
  • Must furnish own tools.
  • Frequent lifting of 26 to 75 pounds and occasional lifting of over 75 pounds.
Desired Qualifications

Five or more years of experience in the operation and maintenance of central commercial-industrial HVAC systems, including troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repair of direct digital control systems associated with that equipment; familiarity with individualized package control systems; possession of a State of Michigan mechanical contractor’s license with unlimited heating, knowledge of and experience with the following…
