Position SummaryThis position will provide information about the university; counsel prospective students and their parents; review applications for admission to determine eligibility; conduct formal presentations in person on‑campus, off‑campus, and virtually. The role includes territory management responsibilities, including recruitment, selection, and enrollment of prospective students from assigned geographic regions in Michigan, currently Southwest Michigan but may change. The candidate must travel, work evening and weekend events, and communicate with prospective students outside of regular office hours.
Attendance at campus and off‑campus events, special programs, and meetings with guests are also required. The admissions counselor is often the first and only interface prospective students have with the university, impacting admissions and the university’s financial base and academic reputation.
- Knowledge equivalent to a four‑year college degree program.
- 6 months to 1 year of progressively responsible experience in admissions, counseling, public relations, student services, or a related area.
- Experience with database, spreadsheet, desktop publishing, and/or presentation software.
- Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Two years of experience in admissions, public relations, higher education, or related area.
- Strong work ethics and high level of professionalism.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize quickly, work independently and take initiative.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Experience working as part of a team in a fast‑paced environment.
- Experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- Experience conducting presentations to diverse audiences.
- Experience with secondary or post‑secondary students preferred.
- Critical reasoning, sound judgment, strict confidentiality.
- Familiarity with Michigan State University.
Experience with MSU’s Slate system or an equivalent customer relationship management tool is preferred.
