Overview
Residential Care Counselor role at Brown University Health. Responsible for the care and safety of assigned children; participates as a member of the multidisciplinary treatment team and contributes to the formulation and implementation of the therapeutic residential treatment plan under the direction of the Residential Care Supervisor.

- Participates in maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment.
- Develops and operationalizes the residential care plan for assigned children according to department and program policies.
- Maintains and documents level of child observation as ordered by the physician or Program Director each shift.
- Supervises assigned children in daily routines and assists with activities of daily living.
- Identifies, reports, and resolves potential problems in the Program.
- Demonstrates appropriate incident follow-up skills with timely verbal reporting and documentation in the child s chart.
- Intervenes in disruptive or unsafe situations with timely therapeutic intervention.
- Adheres to Hospital, Departmental, and Program policies and procedures.
- Attends program meetings as assigned and maintains current crisis management, CPR, ERS, Safety & OSHA certifications.
- Participates in staff development meetings and follows all hospital and program policies.
- Contributes to the residential child care planning process under the direction of the Residential Care Supervisor.
- Participates in initial admission interviews and supports the therapeutic alliance with child and family on admission.
- Completes initial milieu assessment within 24 hours and develops an initial problem list and residential care plan within 24 hours of admission; reviews and revises the plan daily as needed.
- Communicates individual child residential treatment plans to program staff and other multidisciplinary providers.
- Participates in DPCs, treatment team, and shift reports; supports QA indicators and responsibilities.
- Documents significant child/family observations in a timely and accurate manner.
- Contributes to staff development by sharing experience-based knowledge.
- Supports and participates in the development of residential care plans and behavioral management; assists with activities of daily living and hygiene as appropriate.
- Sets consistent, supportive therapeutic limits within established guidelines.
- Implements behavioral programs in collaboration with off-line clinicians.
- Helps organize program activities and models appropriate staff/child interactions for children and families.
- Handles crisis situations safely, using the least restrictive, safe patient care alternatives.
- Seeks supervision and incorporates feedback to improve job performance.
- Baccalaureate Degree in a Human Service field. Other education and experience may be substituted at the Hiring Manager’s discretion.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills to provide care to patients across the lifespan with consideration of aging processes, development, and cultural patterns.
- Six months to one year of direct child care work with emotionally impaired youth.
- Current Bradley Hospital Crisis Management certification or enrollment in Bradley Hospital course.
- Current CPR certification.
- Current ERS, Safety & OSHA certification.
- Ability to perform independently within program policies and refer complex problems to supervisor as needed.
