Overview
Arcelor Mittal Global R&D East Chicago Center is seeking a skilled and motivated Research Engineer/Scientist possessing a strong fundamental background in material science with a focus on electromagnetic materials and with experience in developing and characterizing steels for electrical motor applications. This position, based in East Chicago, Indiana, will support electrical steel development projects for Arcelor Mittal Global R&D and Arcelor Mittal North America.
The ideal candidate should possess a strong academic background in Physical Metallurgy and a deep understanding of the type of steels used for electrical motor and transformer applications. The candidate will be responsible for high-level product support for Arcelor Mittal’s Electrical Steel lines and detailed material characterization including microstructure and magnetic properties. Close collaboration on the development of new electrical steels with Arcelor Mittal’s sister research laboratories is required.
Good knowledge and application of advanced data analysis techniques including AI is necessary. The candidate must be able to work independently as well in teams and to manage technician and equipment resources in the laboratory. Travel both domestically and internationally will be required up to 10% of the time.
- Manage and execute R&D projects by developing or assisting in the development of advanced steels for electrical motor and transformer applications.
- Manage and conduct detailed metallurgical and electromagnetic testing and characterization of electrical steels.
- Provide technical support on commercial electrical steels for Arcelor Mittal plants and customers.
- Collaborate with Arcelor Mittal Global teams on new electrical steel development.
- Generate and present technical reports.
- Travel to Arcelor Mittal plants, customer locations, and sister laboratories both domestically and internationally as required.
- Perform other duties as required.
- Master’s degree in material science, applied physics or related field.
- Proven experience using advanced material characterization instrumentation (SEM, TEM, EBSD).
- Good understanding of electromagnetism and electromagnetic theory.
- Strong data analysis capabilities using machine learning and other artificial intelligence techniques.
- Proven problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- PhD in Physical Metallurgy or material science.
- 4+ years experience in development and characterization of electrical steels.
- Well versed in equipment and procedures for testing magnetic properties of steel.
- Excellent knowledge of electromagnetics and modeling.
- Extensive knowledge and experience in the processing and application of electrical steels.
- Proficient in planning and managing projects in a team environment.
