The post holder will practice within a team of nursing staff and act as a ‘named nurse’ for a group of patients; assessing, planning, and implementing and evaluating their care needs. Initially requiring direct supervision the post holder will develop and maintain specialist skills in order to provide the highest standard of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of individualised patient care enabling them to work without supervision.
They will be expected to co‑ordinate a ward area and to provide direct supervision to junior staff.
They will take direct managerial responsibility for the clinical area in the absence of senior sister or as delegated by the matron.
Main duties of the job- To be a highly competent, and visible practitioner within the speciality and demonstrate clinical expertise in the care of all patients receiving treatment on the unit.
- To deliver a high standard of nursing care which is evidence based.
- To promote Family Integrated Care and ensure the provision of a welcoming, caring and safe environment for the babies, families, visitors and staff.
- To manage clinical emergencies as required, ensuring that you are up to date with NLS training and to develop and maintain clinical skills and knowledge.
- To liaise with all members of the MDT in a manner that promotes effective teamwork.
- To liaise with the MDT regarding discharge and follow up and to facilitate the discharge of babies into the community with support to the family at home.
- To support the charge nurse in achieving department objectives, and support the process of continuous quality improvement.
