Job Description

Position: Bus Driver/Custodian

Supervisor: Maintenance & Facilities Supervisor

Division: Tribal Education Administration

Department: Tribal Education

Responsibilities

Responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of assigned vehicles, facilities, and for the health and safety of all passengers transported in the school bus. Also performs general building custodial duties at the facility assigned and meets Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas, federal, state and local requirements. Follow routine cleaning and maintenance procedures to maintain a high standard of safety.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Child Development and Health Services
  • Assist Bus Monitor or designee in maintaining roster of children on the school bus.
  • Assist the Bus Monitor or designee in the supervision of children in the bus.
  • Maintain First Aid and Bodily Fluids Kits on the bus.
  • Provide First Aide/CPR to children as needed.
  • Store cleaning supplies in accordance with all federal, state, local laws, and regulations.
  • Transport medication in accordance with agency policies and procedures.
  • Conduct bus evacuation drills as required.
  • Provide Child Safety Car Seats as appropriate for children transported.
  • Maintain agency sanitation requirements while transporting food on field trips.
  • Release children only to a parent or legal guardian or other individual identified by the parent or legal guardian.
  • Assist teachers with transportation lessons and activities.
  • Coordinate with cook for meals for children with appointments.
  • Assist the Bus Monitor in making the children feel safe and comfortable while being transported in the bus.
Family and Community Partnerships
  • Provide transportation for parents for attending meetings and trainings.
  • Provide bus evacuation training to parents and volunteers.
Program Design
  • Provide safe transportation of children in agency vehicles.
  • Maintain materials and equipment in a safe and operable condition.
  • Sanitize equipment and materials on a weekly basis or as needed.
  • Maintain center vehicles in compliance with state/federal laws and regulations.
  • Maintain center vehicles with emergency equipment and other needed supplies and materials.
  • Conduct daily inspections of center vehicles.
  • Perform general building maintenance functions such as minor repair and upkeep.
  • Perform general outside maintenance to include playground area and parking lot.
  • With approval of the Tribal Education Operations Coordinator, order custodial supplies and equipment.
  • Perform janitorial functions that may include but are not limited to vacuuming carpets, washing cots, cleaning restroom, removing trash, sweeping, mopping, and waxing of floors.
  • Pick up, deliver, load, and unload equipment, materials, and supplies.
Program Governance
  • Adheres to all local, state and federal regulations when transporting students.
  • Complies with agency policies and procedures.
Planning
  • Plan Bus Routes with Tribal Education Operations Director and College and Career Services Manager to ensure timely arrival of children at the center.
  • Plan Bus Evacuation Drills
  • Schedule vehicle for planned maintenance.
Communication
  • Communicate center information and activities with parents.
  • Communicate parent information to teachers and other center staff.
  • Communicate children’s health related issues with Family Service Coordinator.
  • Report maintenance related problems on the bus to the Head Start Director.
  • Attend monthly staff meetings.
Record Keeping and Reporting
  • Reports any mechanical discrepancies immediately.
  • Document Evacuation Drills.
  • Prepare and submit accident reports.
  • Complete and submit Daily walk Around Inspection Form.
Ongoing Monitoring
  • Monitor the performance of assigned vehicle on a daily basis.
Human Resources
  • Maintain all personal certifications and training requirements current, including DOT physical.
