The Med Surg RN is responsible for staffing the hospital’s medical floor on each shift. The nurse demonstrates skills in basic nursing care aligned with the hospital’s procedures and scope of services. The nurse acts as a patient advocate, providing continuity of care through collaboration with the health care team and supports the organization’s philosophy, objectives, and goals. The Med Surg Nurse assesses the needs of individual patients including adult, pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric patients.

• Performs assessment/data collection in an ongoing and systematic manner, focusing on physiologic, psychological and cognitive status.
• Formulates a goal directed plan of care, prioritized based on nursing diagnoses and patient outcomes.
• Implements care in a knowledgeable, skilled, and consistent manner to achieve patient outcomes through nursing processes.
• Establishes priorities of patient care based on essential needs and available center resources (time, personnel, equipment, supplies).
• Performs efficiently in emergency patient situations following established protocols, remaining calm, informing appropriate persons, and documenting events.
• Demonstrates applied knowledge in medical/surgical patient care, pharmacology, laboratory values, safety, legal issues, and emergency equipment.
• Practices effective problem identification and resolution as a method of sound decision making.

• Completes documentation in the patient record timely, accurately, and concisely.
• Works as part of a team in delivering patient care.
• Maintains current BLS and can perform in emergency situations.
• Attends mandatory in-services and participates in staff meetings.
• Remains flexible, adaptive and able to implement new ideas and approaches.
• Treats all patients equally in accordance with the Facility’s Patient Rights policy.
• Reviews and carries out physician orders in a professional manner.
• Counts narcotics with another nurse and replenishes stock as necessary, adhering to medication management protocols.
• Conducts initial assessment and medication reconciliation upon patient admission.
• Demonstrates knowledge and responsiveness to emergency situations (e.g., cardiac arrest, respiratory distress, drug reaction, fire, disaster).
• Initiates basic life support measures if required.
• Reports and completes appropriate forms for variance incidents related to patients, visitors, and employees.
• Ensures emergency equipment is functioning properly daily.
• Ensures medications and supplies are adequately stocked and within expiration range.
• Other duties as assigned.

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
• Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Texas.
• Current BLS Certification

• Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
• Ability to write simple correspondence.
• Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
• Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
• Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
