Staff Backend Engineer – Piper Companies
Piper Companies is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to join a leading organization in the education technology industry. The Staff Backend Engineer will play a critical role in shaping the services that power mobile and web platforms, directly impacting the experience of students, educators, and partners worldwide. This is a direct placement with the company and requires you to sit on site in Durham, NC several days per week.
Responsibilities- Design and implement robust, scalable APIs and backend services to support mobile and web platforms.
- Ensure consistent service delivery across multiple clients and maintain alignment with overall system architecture.
- Collaborate with engineering, product, and design teams to translate requirements into elegant backend solutions.
- Optimize integrations for enterprise partners and manage assessment data efficiently.
- Participate in technical design sessions, lead kickoffs, and advocate for best practices in backend development.
- Contribute to long‑term strategic decisions, including evaluating and prototyping next‑gen server infrastructure in modern languages such as Go or Rust.
- Mentor team members, conduct thoughtful code reviews, and foster a culture of engineering excellence.
- 8+ years of professional backend engineering experience, with strong expertise in API design and development.
- Proficiency in modern backend technologies and frameworks (Node.js, Type Script preferred).
- Experience with database systems (SQL and No
SQL) and scalable architecture patterns. - Strong focus on code quality, testing, and documentation.
- $150,000 - $170,000 base salary
