Role PurposePerform a variety of interpretation, translation and Medical escort services to assist non-English speaking patients receiving care within the Duke Health System.
HoursDuke Regional Medical Interpreter department is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A 30-hour position includes weekend shifts required. Shifts are 7.5 hours:
Monday-Friday then Saturdays either 7:00 am–1:30 pm or 1:00 pm–7:30 pm. Weekdays will likely be 7:30 am–3:00 pm Monday-Wednesday or Wednesday-Friday. Flexibility is required to provide coverage for call-outs and holidays as needed.
- Participate as a neutral party in the conduit of information between Duke staff and international or domestic patients/visitors.
- Ensure that information pertaining to outpatient services, hospitalization, advance directives, consents, diagnosis and prognosis, treatment plan, follow-up appointments, and health care education are accurately communicated.
- Address patient questions and concerns and document per Risk Management Directives.
- Provide interpreter services, conveying messages exactly as spoken rather than summarizing subjectively.
- Provide required documentation identified by the International Patient Center.
- Maintain accurate daily records of all service requests and provision of services; maintain documentation within the program database.
- Promote customer satisfaction related to Duke services and notify a supervisor of issues impacting patients or staff.
- Participate in continuing education programs and competency training to enhance professional role as an International Medical Escort.
- Ensure all policies and procedures related to process, service, and employee work rules are followed.
- Maintain confidentiality in all matters related to patient care and non-English speaking patients/families/escorts.
- Participate in on-call coverage to provide interpretation/translation services during non-business and business hours as assigned.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to work with diverse populations from various economic backgrounds and age groups.
- Ability to work as an effective member of a dedicated team.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced health care environment with a variety of customer service needs.
- Accurate and appropriate interpretation skills at all times.
- Current N.C. Driver s License with driving record suitable to Duke Van operations and corporate risk management.
Education
- High-School Diploma or equivalent
- Successful completion of conversation/translation competency testing in the secondary language
- Knowledge of Medical Terminology
Experience
- Previous experience in a health care setting preferred
