RESPONSIBILITIESDirect supervision of social workers within the child welfare support unit. This unit receives cases from other counties and states to assist with the ongoing monitoring and assessment of safety for children residing/placed in Durham County; the cases include In-Home and Permanency Planning. This team is also assigned Parent Motions which requires review of previous court orders, contact with birth parents, child(ren), guardians/custodians to make a sound recommendation to the court.
In addition, this position supervises the Domestic Violence Coordinator who coordinates services for families impacted by intimate partner violence/domestic violence.
This position also serves as the back-up to the Intake Supervisor, screening reports for abuse, neglect, abandonment and/or dependency. This supervisor is responsible for ensuring social workers carry out their functions of protecting children, complying with court orders, North Carolina Child Welfare Statutes and laws, Federal Child Welfare Statutes and Laws as well as meet the expectations of the county and agency.
KNOWLEDGESKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Must have knowledge of basic supervisory processes, including social work process approach to case consultation, planning, organizing, and directing.
- Must have knowledge of a variety of professional roles, including teaching adults, managing, administrating, and providing services.
- Complete understanding of normal and abnormal child development.
- Ability to assess family situations which permits complete understanding of family dynamics, and which forms an accurate basis of intervention.
- Knowledge of North Carolina legal system so that the supervisor can apply its precepts.
- Knowledge of social work processes and resources serving children.
- Knowledge of, and acceptance of, people’s ability to commit atrocious acts and their ability to change.
Master's degree in social work from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of directly related experience; or a bachelor's degree in social work from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of directly related experience; or a Master's degree in a human services field from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of directly related experience; or a bachelor's degree and four years of directly related experience;
or a bachelor's degree from an appropriately accredited institution and five years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Requires a valid North Carolina driver’s license with an acceptable three-year driving record and a vehicle.
